Re: Let the Deportations Begin!
That's both tragic and scary! I can even imagine that Trump might try to find some pretext for characterizing a naturalized citizen as an invader merely for disagreeing with him and speaking out against him and then nullifying their citizenship and their children's birthright citizenship, if he thinks he can get away with it.Doctor Steuss wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 8:23 pmFor informational purposes, a prior Trump nominee, and potential Supreme Court Justice pick should a vacancy arise, Judge James Ho (Empirical S.COTUS** thinks he’s the #1 most likely pick) has said that all it would take for the 14 Amendment to no longer apply to children of illegal immigrants would be for a declaration of illegal immigrants as an invasion.
~Judge James Ho, in an interview with Josh Blackman.“Birthright citizenship is supported by various Supreme Court opinions, both unanimous and separate opinions involving Justices Scalia, Thomas, Alito, and others. But birthright citizenship obviously doesn’t apply in case of war or invasion. No one to my knowledge has ever argued that the children of invading aliens are entitled to birthright citizenship. And I can’t imagine what the legal argument for that would be.”
In my opinion, the deck is already being stacked, and the roadwork being laid, to jettison American citizens. I think it's likely a given that Trump will at least try to deport US citizens. The only question is whether other guardrails will be sufficient to keep it from happening, or if there will be enough outcry from Americans to cause Trump to soften his Mein Kampf "poisoning the blood of the country" stance. Based on the insatiable xenophobia of MAGA, I'm not particularly hopeful for the latter.

Re: Let the Deportations Begin!
There are three categories here. I'm guessing that big number was aimed at newly naturalized citizens. For the first two years, it's a relatively low bar to strip citizenship. Basically, if something on the form was filled out wrong and they want to make a big deal of it. No idea what Miller thinks he can get people on, because the "low bar" is still pretty high. It would be quite a paper witch hunt because anything they knew about from the background check can't be used against them. After the two years, it's much harder, and very rarely happens. It would be nearly inconceivable to go after people in large numbers.Steuss wrote:Miller has stated the Trump admin plan is to reinstitute their previous program of revoking people's citizenship. I think the number of files his admin had open when he was President was about 700k (going from memory). The precedent has already been set, and the framework goes back to at least Obama for removing someone's citizenship for naturalized people, but I'm not sure how or if that could work with birthright. All it would take is one case to set the precedence though (like it did with the framework that Obama was able to create).
For natural born citizens, it's a roundabout process because technically such a person can't be stripped. A natural born citizen can renounce, however. If a natural born citizen is guilty of treason, then they've self-stripped their own citizenship. So, you know how Donald Trump and Fox news calls every Democrat under the sun a traitor and guilty of treason? If they are right, then every Democrat has effectively renounced their citizenship, and Trump can proceed with deportation without further ado. I don't know the process, but the person can challenge the presumptive self-stripping. But it is a case of guilty until proven innocent at that point. I'm pretty sure this was another gift of Democrat lawmakers thinking they were doing the right thing without knowing MAGA lurked around the corner.
I could be off here as it was years ago I read about this, but I think there was a case of this happening years ago where some young guy from Orange County joined Al Qaeda, was stripped and deported even though he was born here. Why it stuck in my mind is that I don't think he'd committed any crimes per se, just went on YouTube and celebrated 9/11 and I was thinking, wow, that's a real setup for an abuse of the process.

In a way: President Andrew Johnson pardoned Jefferson Davis. President Carter restored his citizenship. For natural born citizens, it's a roundabout process because technically such a person can't be stripped. A natural born citizen can renounce, however. You could have simply posted "without slaves who will pick our cotton?"Some Schmo wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 2:59 pmI really hope Trump decides to deport millions of legal citizens. All those businesses that rely on cheap labor will have a fit. Families will be broken apart. Inflation will skyrocket (in addition to what will happen with Trump's tariff plans). If the GOP thinks we aren't having enough babies now, just wait till young people can't afford to take care of themselves, let alone a baby. We're pretty much already there. More inflation will make it worse.

I guess we’ll find out - or not - once the deportations begin.

Oh course, I knew Ceeboo would dodge that question well before reading the next couple of pages which proved he did precisely that.canpakes wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 5:16 pmTrump has stated that he will deport whole families of mixed status. As in, if a parent is not a citizen, but their child is one via birthright citizenship, then deportation of both would proceed on the basis of the parent’s status. The child, as a citizen, will still be booted along with the parent.
Do you agree with that approach?
“Asked about families with mixed immigration status — where parents are in the country illegally but their children are not — Trump said, “I don’t want to be breaking up families, so the only way you don’t break up the family is you keep them together, and you have to send them all back.”
Trump also doubled down on his campaign promise to end birthright citizenship, which is protected by the 14th Amendment, and suggested he may attempt to overturn the right through executive action.”

Yeah, it's a slight mystery that this would surprise ceeboo (although not really - ceeboo makes a habit of feigning moral concern). After all, ceeboo did his research to come to the best conclusion on who the better choice for President was, so I'm sure he knows accepting things like deporting legal citizens comes with the package. Hell, sometimes you need a convicted criminal lying rapist in the White House, because communism!
It couldn't possibly be because ceeboo is massively ignorant on, well, everything.

It's a mystery that I would be surprised that you expressed a hope that Trump deports legal citizens? Let me try to clear up the mystery - I was indeed surprised to learn you hope for such a thing. Some Schmo wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2024 3:22 pmYeah, it's a slight mystery that this would surprise ceeboo
