Court Strikes Down Key Part of Trump’s Unlawful Voting Executive Order, Permanently Blocking Show-Your-Papers Requirement

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A federal court today issued a decisive ruling in League of Women Voters Education Fund v. Trump, permanently blocking a provision of President Trump’s March voting executive order that sought to add a requirement to show a passport or similar document proving citizenship when registering to vote with the federal voter registration form that would disproportionately impact voters of color. The decision grants summary judgment to the plaintiffs, finding that the President lacks the authority to unilaterally alter election procedures — powers that rest with Congress and the states.
The ruling makes permanent the preliminary injunction issued in the case in April, and reaffirms a foundational principle of American democracy: no president can violate the separation of powers to change our elections and erect barriers that disenfranchise eligible voters.
In a joint statement, plaintiffs and counsel, who are a coalition of voting and civil rights organizations, said:
“The court’s ruling confirms what we have long argued: the President may not rewrite election law to impose a burdensome show-your-papers rule that would shut out countless Americans from the ballot box. This executive order was an attempted overreach of power, bypassing the Constitution’s clear allocation of authority to Congress and the states to set election rules. Our democracy is strongest when every eligible voter can register and vote free from expensive and unnecessary requirements.”
The League of Women Voters Education Fund, League of Women Voters of the United States, League of Women Voters of Arizona, Hispanic Federation, NAACP, OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates, and Asian and Pacific Islander Vote are represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU of D.C., Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC, Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and LatinoJustice PRLDEF.
Thank goodness that even the conservative dominated Supreme Court found it necessary to strike down that provision in Trump's executive order. If it were to stand, 55% of U.S. Citizens could almost immediately lose the right to vote! The unmitigated gall of that man is breathtakingly frightening!
Can there really be any remaining reasonable doubt that Trump aims to eventually achieve, unchallengeable despotic power like Kim Jong Un or Vladimir Putin?
No precept or claim is more suspect or more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.

Washington — President Trump said Tuesday that federal food benefits provided through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will go out only when Democrats vote to end the ongoing government shutdown.
In a post on Truth Social, the president wrote that SNAP benefits "will be given only when the Radical Left Democrats open up government, which they can easily do, and not before!"
Mr. Trump's comment comes a day after administration lawyers told a federal court in Rhode Island that it would tap into a contingency fund to issue partial food stamp payments for November. The Justice Department said in a filing that the Department of Agriculture would provide states with information necessary for calculating the benefits due to each eligible household, which would allow states to then begin disbursements.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said on X that her agency sent that guidance to states Tuesday morning, but warned it would be a "cumbersome process" that could result in a weeks-long delay in food stamp payments going out recipients.
"If the government opens, families get their FULL benefit much more quickly," she wrote.
CBS News has asked the White House for clarification about what the president's post means for the contingency funds.
The government shutdown entered its 35th day Tuesday and is on track to become the longest in U.S. history later in the day, surpassing the lapse in federal funding that occurred during Mr. Trump's first term.
More than 42 million Americans rely on SNAP to purchase food each month. The program is funded by the federal government and administered by states, which distribute the nutrition assistance to eligible participants. But the Department of Agriculture said late last month that the food aid would not go out to recipients on Nov. 1 because "the well has run dry" amid the government shutdown.
The notice followed the Trump administration's decision not to use roughly $5 billion in contingency funds to keep the benefits flowing to Americans who rely on SNAP for November. The Department of Agriculture told states in a memo last month that the reserve funds were "not legally available to cover regular benefits."

The FAA's flight reductions were set to begin Friday and could continue to worsen over the weekend.
The situation has left travelers angry and anxious. Some tried to move their travel plans up, and others were trying to figure out alternatives in case their flights were canceled.
… As of Friday morning, more than 1,200 of today's flights were canceled, according to Flight Aware, and the situation was set to get much worse.
Travelers at a string of airports across the country, including San Francisco International, experienced significant delays Friday due to staffing shortages.
The Federal Aviation Administration announced earlier this week that it planned to cut air traffic by 10% at 40 airports nationwide to maintain travel safety as the government shutdown stretched into its second month.
The shutdown has already triggered staffing shortages and periodical flight delays and cancellations over the last month. But the full flight reductions began Friday and could continue to worsen over the days ahead.
Major hubs such as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport saw the most cancellations Friday morning. But California, with five of its airports including Los Angeles International Airport slated for flight cancellations, was particularly hard hit.
More than 50 flights were canceled in and out of LAX on Friday morning, with 27 flights canceled going out and 24 coming in. SFO and San Diego International Airport also saw dozens of flights canceled.
More flights will be cut as the FAA scales back air travel to take pressure off air traffic controllers, who have been working unpaid during the shutdown. According to an emergency order a released by the Trump administration Thursday evening, airlines must cut flights by 4% on Friday and then ramp up to 6% by Tuesday, 8% by Thursday and 10% by Nov. 14.

Hopefully Kash Patel's taxpayer funded private jet is still able to take him on date nights.
To be fair, I think that he’s required to use that option even for personal travels, so that he can have transportation at the ready if an urgent situation calls for it.
Yet, Patel criticized past Directors for doing the same, and then he fired some staff after the recent story about his flight to see his girlfriend hit the news cycle, and I don’t quite understand what the reasoning behind that was. But this entire Administration seems to be staffed primarily with people who have the temperament, impulse control and emotional maturity of 12-year-olds, so they’re constantly doing so many things that defy adult reasoning.
