This topic is far too vital to be allowed to die.

truth dancer wrote:Maybe now would be a good time for a reminder on cognitive distortions:

All-or-nothing thinking: Thinking of things in absolute terms, like "always", "every" or "never".

Magnification (catastrophizing): You exaggerate the importance of things, such as your mistakes.

Examples:

Wife, "This isn't my favorite salad you made for dinner".

Husband, "So, I'm the worst cook in the entire world. OK, so you hate everything I have ever made for you. Sorry I am such a horrible husband."

Or...

Boss, "It would be more respectful and helpful if you were honest".

Worker, "OK, so I'm the worst person in the world, I'm best friends with Hitler, I can't do anything right, and I am going to burn in Hell for eternity."

Or...

Friend, "You really hurt me".

Friend, "OK, I'm sorry for everything I have ever done to anyone in the entire world, including the ants I stepped on and the bird I hit when I first got my license".

Thanks TD,

All or Nothing and Magnification are behaviors we hope we can drum out of our children so they can become mature adults someday.

It's a minimizing/mocking of other's values and opinions as well. This disrespect is usually applied by one that is either proud, unrepentant, arrogant or unteachable as well as someone that is not particularly confident about his/her position. That is why we would expect it from an adolescent rather than a mature adult.

I don't give kids a pass when they talk like Dan, otherwise they may become like Dan.
