There were no gold plates to transport to Cumorah.
There is NO evidence of gold during Book of Mormon times in the Book of Mormon Mesoamerica location.
None.
Ask any reputable, knowledgeable, and honest apologist and he/she will confirm that there was no gold (in that time and location), out of which to make plates.
Just keeping it real! ;-)

Plates had the appearance of gold. No one ever said they were gold.
Just keeping it real.
The Book of Mormon mentions Gold many times, which is hugely anachronistic.
Plates made of gold upon which the ancient American prophet Mormon abridged the record of his people. Joseph Smith translated the writings on the gold plates into what became the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

Published by the church = official doctrine.
There you have it, bcspace. It's official doctrine that the plates were gold. Not a gold alloy or something else.

That's why the dimensional portal theory shows up occasionally, because the plates were buried in a cave containing "many wagon loads" of plates and other artifacts, including the Sword of Laban. Obviously such a cave does not exist in Palmyra in any physical sense, and to think that Moroni led a wagon train hauling all that gold from Mesoamerica is just unrealistic.

Hence, dimensional portal.
I just have to laugh every time I here that phrase in context of the plates. Can you imagine one of the 12 at some General Conference talking about the dimensional portal hidden at Hill Cumorah in New York.

Maybe the treasure guardian sinks it deeper into the earth anytime someone goes looking for it.

I would like Mr. BCSpace & Mr. Simon to explain the LDS church's official doctrine that the gold plates were/are gold.

Every record...falsified, every book rewritten...every statue...has been renamed or torn down, every date...altered...the process is continuing...minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Ideology is always right.

Ouch!! That adds about 100 lbs. to the myth.
But more importantly, the church doesn't have to alter the Golden Plates primary song. "The golden appearing plates lay hidden, deep in a mountain side...." or "The tumbaga plates lay hidden, deep in a mountain side...." just doesn't flow as well.
