Re: My close encounter with Elder Bednar
I suspect if you had met Billy Graham in his prime you would have had the same experience -- I once saw Franklin Graham in a restaurant. I was attending a state track meet in Indianapolis at the same time they were having a Billy Graham crusade in town. Same impression. And let's face it -- even Franklin Graham is a whole lot more well known than David Bednar.

Great story Shades, I actually felt like I was in the scene.
I do feel like I had the same experience once but with Pres. Hinkley.
I am unsure what to make of it.

I've met several GA's, and they've usually come off as "regular guys". Really wise, nice regular guys.
I suspect the characteristics of Elder Bednar in the OP (and the expensive suit) are a result of his personal...uh..."persona" and wealth, and not a shared trait of all apostles.
The encounter also lessens my faith in the ability of apostles to discern, since Elder Bednar was that close to Dr. Shades and didn't realize he was in the presence of...one so in need of help ;)

You think he would be able to tell that he had a lost sheep around him. Granted there are probably tons of lost sheep around Elder Bednar at the Salt Lake airport. Although, you would think Dr. Shades would get special notice because he is the founder of this board. Dr. Shades isn't really just a lost sheep is a full out apostate that allows for free speech on a Mormon discussion board. Where there are frequent encounters between the number one critics and number one apologists of the church. How come Elder Bednar could not discern who Dr. Shades was and why didn't Elder Bednar talk to him to try and get him back?

So... not a trust fund baby. Therefore, I'm assuming he's paid by the church, and those $XK suits are therefore paid from the same funds that paid for Packer's million dollar estate.
Great. Just great.

I have also met several of the apostles. They come off as being mostly regular guys with somewhat distinct personalities.
I actually remember specifically meeting Jeff Holland during a meeting for my mission. He came off as kind of a putz. The rest of the ones I've met seemed more or less okay, with Uchtdorf and Scott the nicest of the bunch. Wirthlin and Oaks were okay. So was Perry I guess. The heart surgeon guy is off putting because of the whole polygamy thing and comes off as a bit creepy in person. I think that I've met one other, but I forget whom.
So, no, they're just regular guys.
Oh, I just remember that Nelson is the heart surgeon guy. Yeah, he's a bit creepy in person.

Hi Harmony,
Maybe it is his wife that has money? I have never researched her background, but with the family name of Whitney, it suggests possibilities. I should do some checking some day on that line.
Anyone else know?
I detest my loose style and my libertine sentiments. I thank God, who has removed from my eyes the veil...

Geez, give him a break. He was just getting home from a trip. He might have been tired and hungry, looking forward to a nice soak in his tub and a relaxing evening at home.
And maybe he's one of the Brethren who thinks apostates/inactives aren't worth worrying about. Maybe he's one of those "let 'em go to hell" types.
I mean, geez... even God took a break.

Maybe. But he wasn't sitting around doing nothing living on his wife's money when they called him to jet to Rexburg. He was a university professor. I mean... we know how hard Daniel works.
