But hey, at least he was lying while using his legal name. That's more important than telling the truth anonymously.

Thanks, guys. I am busy downloading as many of the transcripts as are available.

Yahoo Bot wrote:Keeping the doctrine of plural marriage a private doctrine is, really, a far different thing than slandering real people with an anonymous name and avatar. Both are serious matters, and in my view, indefensible, but are unrelated.
Just because somebody was abused as a child does not justify that someone going out and molesting children on his own. Just because a child of mine was the victim of a hit-and-run accident doesn't mean I can go out and run down a child in the street on my own. Just because one of my published pieces was plagiarized by another person does not mean I can go out and be unprofessional in my published works.
Similarly, merely because you take exception to the secrecy of certain early Mormon marital practices does not justify you being a slanderous, unprofessional coward.
Its that they both have the protective cover of secrecy that makes the polygamy ongoing in the face of public denials by JSJr relevant to your bitching about people using aliases when they post online.

Yahoo Bot wrote: As was explained by many during the Smoot hearings this was not an oath to overthrow the country. It would seem that the full Senate agreed by refusing to unseat Smoot even though he had taken this oath.
Rollo Tomasi wrote:But Smoot lied to the Senate committee about whether he took it -- claiming he didn't recall ever taking it, and, incredibly, also claiming that he (an apostle!) did not remember such an oath/prayer being a part of the endowment ceremony.
Yahoo Bot wrote: Calling people liars, huh? On what basis -- simply because you don't agree with them?
In those days, apostles, like everybody else, went through the temple endowment ceremony once in their lives, as Smoot explained. Unless an apostle was also an officiator, and some were, and as Smoot explained, there is little chance a normal person would remember the details. Smoot didn't. The Senate committee relied upon the testimony of several others to reconstruct the oath and even they were not in agreement.
So you are saying that an Apostle of the Lord's One True Church, once given the keys that would get him into the Celestial Kingdom, and having some responsibility for a million or so other folks planning to get there by the same route, would forget how he got those keys, what they were, and how they worked?
How conveeenient.
David Hume: "---Mistakes in philosophy are merely ridiculous, those in religion are dangerous."

I always enjoy watching Mormons paint their greatest figures in history as a collective group of inept, feeble minded morons. Bravo.

You'd have to know Smoot to appreciate him. He wasn't active in the Church.

It always seems to come down to a choice between that or amoral, cynical scheisters. They always go with option A when pressed.

When did you and Reed last lunch together? (Bot is right. Smoot was an inactive apostle, even refusing to leave his senate duties on at least one occasion to take the train trip to SLC for GC. I understand that Heber J Grant, the LDS Pres, was none too happy about that.)Yahoo Bot wrote:You'd have to know Smoot to appreciate him. He wasn't active in the Church.

Corporate greed is disturbing, yes, but Parental Greed is simply beyond the pale.
What are the odds that the older boy finds himself in Bloom's next edition of Genius?
;)
KA
PS. As for the temple oaths, I doubt Mitt Romney feels beholden to them. He's a politician, after all.

Are you suggesting that Romney is a politician first, and only a Mormon second?KimberlyAnn wrote:As for the temple oaths, I doubt Mitt Romney feels beholden to them. He's a politician, after all.
