To comment on the blog post itself. This grace oriented paradigm would help them escape some of the more difficult historical problems, but the shift to the new paradigm may damage the testimonies of many of the current members. Many of them view the past and present prophets as nearly infallible. Perhaps they could take a generational approach and teach the younger generations the grace based approach that you are suggesting and continue to teach the older generations the old way (Although they may not have time for this before losing significant membership). Also knowing that their leaders are capable of making these mistakes would turn most members into cafeteria Mormons. If the leaders can make mistakes, they can ignore their counsel when they personally object to it.
