I fear you are right about that! I fervently hope that EAllusion's suggestion in a previous thread (see http://www.mormondiscussions.com/phpBB3/posting.php?mode=quote&f=5&p=1012435) does not come to pass!
Maybe Trump is our Sulla.

https://www.britannica.com/biography/Lucius-Cornelius-Sulla
Sulla played a historical role, conclusively shaping and epitomizing the republican ideal shortly before it became submerged. But he was mistaken about the significance of his reforms: he was a temporary dictator because he wanted no one else who might follow him to become a dictator for life; yet by his example he unwittingly paved the way for Julius Caesar.

One impression I get of Trump from his comments is that he aspires to dictator-like powers and privileges and thinks somehow that as president he can acquire such power. Heaven forbid that he should succeed and thereby set a precedent for a series of American despots to follow!

I suspect that he expects or hopes to have the same kind of despotic power and influence now possessed and exercised by his apparent Idol, Vladimir Putin, over his own country.

No precept or claim is more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.

I think that we were the laughingstock of the entire world throughout this entire election cycle.

Probably so! And I fear that in some ways, Hillary Clinton and the Democrats played right into Trump's hands. Their biggest and probably fatal mistake was to nominate her instead of Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren who had much less problematic political baggage. I have little doubt that Bernie would now be the President Elect, had he won the Democratic nomination. I bet a lot of Republican leaders (perhaps even Hillary herself) now regret that decision.

No, the world took Ms. Clinton seriously because she has a world-class reputation, significant political experience and the necessary set of skills. However, now that we have a president-elect who is an ill-mannered, misogynistic pig with absolutely no political experience and social skills that will likely cause a nuclear stand-off, we have become the laughing-stock of the world.

On a side note, Melania Trump as firstLady? after Michelle Obama? What a setback for women. What a crappy example for young girls everywhere.

Lemmie, why do you think so many American voters did not take her seriously? Is it because of their ignorance of her bonafide accomplishments (which are many and significant), or is it because of her association with Bill Clinton who has been perceived by so many as being no less a moral reprobate than Trump himself?

I value your input and opinion on this question.

I agree with you completely regarding Sanders. I don't share your fear for the future, my friend. I was undecided throughout this election process. I think we were faced with the lesser of two evils and that's what we have, and would have had no matter who had won the election.

I'm proud of this country. I don't hold in contempt any of my fellow citizen's whose candidate won today. We spent years of our lives in service to this country and we didn't pick and choose who we were serving with regard to the populace. We served all. We're either a nation united or divided. So far as I am concerned, it's time to pull together in whatever ways we can and be a united front.

We're going into the future together whether we like it or not, and like grindael said, we are strong.

Well, I guess we'll just have to see how this unfolds, Lemmie.

As for me, I don't think I have the energy for more post mortem on this. But I'll appreciate reading the contributions of yourself and others here.

It is a travesty that so many American voters were too uninformed about world affairs to be aware of that reputation and her genuine accomplishments. It will be interesting to see if Trump can nominate a candidate for Secretary of State even half as well respected or accomplished.

I wonder if megalomaniac despots like Kim Jong Un would be any more hesitant to antagonize or threaten President Trump than a less volatile Hillary Clinton.

To be sure! Michelle Obama was a class act that would be difficult for anyone to follow, let alone Melania Trump!

Contempt is more appropriately reserved for those who supported Trump in his relentless campaign of lies and misdirection, combined with appeals to the lowest instincts of his (predominantly male) supporters. And, of course, for the man himself.

So what does this mean in practice? If you mean that you are urging people to unite behind any of Trump's trademark social and economic policies, then good luck with that, but I'd be surprised if that's what you meant. Political opposition remains legitimate even when an election has gone against one. I'd be even more surprised if you expected those policies to have the beneficial results that Trump's supporters so fervently hope to see in their own lives. You seem much too intelligent for that.

I take it, however, that you mean that you intend to go on making a positive contribution to society in the role in which you find yourself. I agree that that is exactly what is called for in a situation like this.

Lol. I just woke up because I went to bed early; I guess I really was burned out on the whole thing!

Anyway. Too funny. Sometimes you just have to laugh at the absurdity life produces. Man oh man I was totally wrong on the whole election! That's what I get for not underestimating the electorate. Well, sometimes you just have to embrace what this nation is all about sometimes and it's this:

Image

And as a personal effort to embrace a smooth transition of power to an elected official I've decided to stop using 'Drumpf', 'Drumpsterfire', and 'We Should've Nominated Bernie'. I'll use President-Elect Trump and then President Trump because the office of the Presidency should be respected.

It's definitely going to be an interesting four years. The comedic material President-Elect Trump will provide will be awesome.
