Well, that just whooshed right over your head. Bernie Sanders would be happy to pay higher taxes tomorrow if taxes were higher.

I think the point is that the tax rate is the minimum amount you must give to the government.

If I felt, morally, that everyone who makes more than $10million should pay an 80% marginal tax rate, and then through some miracle I wrote a song that became a hit and made $15million one year, then according to my principles, I should recognize that while I haven't convinced the government to force others to pay that rate, I now have it in my power to do what I consider is the right thing and pay that 80% rate on the marginal $5million.

Of course, I was thoroughly against the First-Time Home Buyers Tax Credit that was enacted in 2009, but when I bought my home in 2010, I did take the credit. But I admit I'm a hypocrite on the subject (but I'll also make the argument that the market price for homes also accounts for subsidies like the tax credit so I was probably paying more for the home to compensate anyway).

Because (since he is not dumb) he is not advocating voluntary philanthropy as a means to solve the huge social problems of lack of resources and poverty that afflict advanced western societies. He is advocating that, in a society where wealth inequality is huge and growing larger every day, well-off people should pay a larger share of taxation in order to deal with the above-mentioned problems.

Why? Because?

(a) There is no way that voluntary philanthropy has a cat in hell's chance of raising the amount of money required. Individual gestures of the kind you propose can do nothing useful. There are, for a start, too many rich people who agree with Trump that finding ways to be rich and pay not federal tax is 'smart'. People like that are not about to rebrand as philanthropists.

(b) These are problems that require long-term policy planning and stable funding on a national level. Year to year giving simply does not enable that to be done.

Like how you accuse Trump of hypocrisy for his business hiring illegal immigrants? Of course if any other politician wanted real border enforcement this may have been issue for Trump, but as it is Trump is the only one willing to do much of anything to enforce the border amongst Republicans or Democrats.

What Trump is ‘doing’ at the border is only as little as necessary to guarantee the vote of folks such as yourself, and usually amounts to little more than whatever inane rant against immigration that will get the Base’s attention off of his own hypocrisy on things such as his own abuse of the system, via hiring illegal workers at his properties. And that approach works, as can be seen by your comments.

Trump knows that if he refocuses your anger towards immigrants and liberals - as constructs - you’ll completely ignore actions. Case in point: Trump’s rambling threats to ship illegal immigrants to so-called sanctuary cities will be processed by you as “owning the libs”, when the reality is that it does no such thing, but does give thousands of non-citizens free taxpayer-provided passage into the country. Trump will become the premier illegal worker importer of the last 50 years, but you will pretend this somehow serves your interests, because your pride commands that approach.

Feel the Bern. I think he's popular because he is on the right side of the health care, education and other issues and people don't care that he is old. It's time to make the economy less skewed toward the top. As for the complaint that he is a socialist, well, just take a look at the trillions the top 1% took and still takes as a result of our unnecessary wars around the world. Take a look at the failed F-35 and the $3/4 trillion that goes to the military every year. It mostly goes to the top 1% a la socialism for the rich. Banks were bailed out but the people weren't. Jamie Diamond kept his job and didn't go to jail. Here is an article that sums up what's wrong with America:

I decided to watch the whole thing to put all the little clips I'd seen in context.

Bret Baier asked if Bernie thought reducing the military budget would send a signal of weakness to other countries. This must be one of those idiot right wing ideas that's taken root because the base doesn't think things through. I've heard this one before.

So essentially, we're wasting money on in inflated military budget because we want to "appear" tough? Is that it? That's worth our deficit and crumbling infrastructure?

Just how often do these people think foreign adversaries check our military budget before deciding whether or not to attack the US? Do they really think they'd say, "The US slashed their budget! Let's attack!!" Riiiiiight... because we all know you could swallow half an ocean, just not a whole one.

If they were sincerely concerned with foreign perception of US strength, they'd be screaming for a real president instead of this whiny little bitch we have.
