Id love to hear a Henry Rollins story !

There were alot of Black Flag Logos floating around my high school. Along with alot of Misfits logos on the back of denim and leather jackets.

Wanna know how old I am? I had tickets for a Doors show. At Lagoon (they cancelled cuz Jim got arrested in Florida. Thus my first rock show was Santana/Country Joe & the Fish, and Bread). If y'all are nice I'll tell my stories of Bjork, Husker Du, Meat Puppets, many Henry Rollins encounters, Jello Biafra, why I've seen Black Flag more than any other band despite not liking them that much, and more recent Electroclash, Fall and Art Brut encounters.

Golden Oldie: Fad Gadjet, "Salt Lake City, Sunday"

I had no idea that X spoke out about the documentary! X is my favorite band. I saw them last time they played in Nashville and I like John Doe's other projects as well.

I watched Decline II the other evening on tv and thought it was hilarious. Although I'm not sure that was the intention.

by the way, old? Nah! All that means YOU ROCK!!!!!! *not worthy*

I'm having issues with the new White Stripes. I love the title track...it's amazing. The next two songs are good as well. Then comes track 4, Conquest. Maybe it's just me, but that song is awful...perhaps the worst song they've ever written. It has this weird They Might Be Giants Flood era feel to it. The rest of the songs after that one are okay but none of them really stand out to me. I liked their last album, Get Behind Me Satan, a lot better. Pitchfork would disagree with me on this, though.

silent: I like all White Stripes, even Get Behind Me which I thought was their weakest album. I prefer the most stripped down arrangements.

Barrel: I could probably find something online by Exene about "Decline," but I'll just say that John Doe even mentioned their disgust with it a few weeks ago at a screening of a remastered copy of "The Unheard Music" (another documentary that is crap as a film, but contains wonderful early live footage).

Gaz: Rollins is full of crap. That's my considered opinion. I saw two pre-Rollins incarnation of Black Flag---I've seen them more than any other band because they toured so relentlessly in the early 80's. There was a period of a few years where about 3 out of 4 gigs I went to, in four seperate states!--had BF on the bill. (By the way ever hear/see Black Fag? Excellent. Beck's mother was in it). Anyway when Rollins first joined he was this skinny long hair totally working a Jim Morrison vibe. Then he blew up to the overly-muscled meathead thick neck that he is today. Along the way he cobbled together the liberal/conservative/libertarian mish mash of one note ideas that he spokenwords at every opportunity. He can be "charming" if he's got reason to, if not he's a just another rude prima donna. I long ago noticed he had no time for girls. I suspect him to be the biggest gay in gaytown and at least two friends of mine would swear he's hit on them. To be fair, another friend of mine, a well known gay british journalist who's interviewed him countless times, claims that he's not gay.

Steuss: A long, long time ago (the mid 80's), I was in grad school. I was still working a post-punk look: thrift store dresses, short spiked hair, docs, etc. I got called "fag" a lot by the campus frat boys; I can't say why but mid-80's Syracuse U had a rampant homophobic frat culture---some of their antics even made national news.

Some amalgamation of student groups had organized a series of charity concerts, one of which was the Ramones. Since it was some kind of "official" event on campus the organizers had guys from one of the fraternities be bouncers/security for the event.

They were apparently unfamiliar punk show crowd culture: the etiquette of the pit. I've rarely been to a show where its not understood that there is space between the pit and the rest of the crowd and that no one has to participate in the pit if they don't want to. The security frat dicks joined hands and attempted to crowd several layers of people just watching into the pit: I guess they were trying to cordone off the pit, but in their ineptitude they swept alot of people, myself included, into the think of the pit storm.

The guys in the pit were cool when they realized what had happened; they didn't shove any of us. But when we tried to leave the security hand holding circle, the frat boys would not let us through; again and again they shoved people back who were trying to leave. When I tried to explain and again duck under their arms, I was surrounded by frat guys who slugged, kicked and slapped me, all the while calling me a fag, a faggot, and variations thereof and told me to get back inside with the rest of the fags.

I finally got out, but had terrible lumps on my shins---the kicking was the worst. And yes it was only sort of a gay bashing. I can't beleive they thought I was a fag, but who knows?

There were complaints made to the school; as usual nothing came of them. Ironically enough, I had several members of the same frat in one of the classes I was teaching as a TA. When I told them about their brother's antics, they were quick to point out that those guys probably didn't know I was a teacher. If so, they wouldn'ta done it. Good. Glad to know that.

This comment made my blood curl. It's ok to beat someone up if you think they're gay, but only if they're not a teacher?

Blech! It's things like this that make me ashamed to be part of the human race. Sometimes I'd rather be a butt-sniffing dog...

Yeah that's pretty bad, alright. I told them if they couldn't figure out what was wrong with that statement then they should drop my class. A few long minutes of head scratching and, "oh yeah, well they shouldn'ta hit anyone..." I don't know why I didn't make a big stink about it at the time. I guess it was because of the futility of raising issues with a school adminstration that brushed off many homophobic fraternity hijinx. The one that got some national attention that alluded to before was a fraternity that sold t-shirts at a fund raiser with the slogan, "Club Fags, Not Seals" and a circle with a slash through it over a drawing of a bent (limp) wrist.

!!!!!

Tepid reprimand. No fine, no suspensions, no nothing.

Rollins is interesting. He has some good stories to tell when he does interviews, living in the van while touring and whatnot. The only Rollins I ever listened to was post Black Flag. I don't think I've ever listened to a Black Flag song to be truthful, but I do recall how popular they were when I was in high school. I have a Led Zeppelin tribute album called Encomium that has him singing "Four Sticks" that is actually really good, he puts some intensity into it. Blind Melons on there as well doing a great version of "Out on the tiles", and Helmet with David Yow (Jesus Lizard) doind "Custard Pie". A real highlight of the CD is a girl band called Never the Bride doing a version of "Going to California" on piano. Great CD if you can find it.

I think Rollins is an asshole. My husband hates him. They met once and Rollins was very arrogant and condescending.
