The problem is in taking these guys seriously. Attempting to discuss Mormonism with these guys is like trying to discuss Wittgenstein with a bar full of drunks.

William Schryver wrote:That’s right. I’m in the phone book. And, just for the record, Cedar City, UT is the armpit of America. Everyone just stay away. It’s a cesspool of white trash losers and hick farmers who don’t know s*** from shinola. So if you’re traveling along I-15 in this neck of the woods, just keep on driving. We don’t want you and I’m sure you don’t want us.

Just found another pic of Bill:

I invited Dr. Peterson to reply to this thread in order to voice his opinion of Schryver's shenanigans. Since Dr. Peterson at least semi-regularly checks this board (and I assume he receives email), and since I have asked him, point blank, on more than one occasion, for his response to certain of Will's nasty comments (sans response), I thought he'd be a good FARMS-er with whom to check Will's claim that certain of his FARMS friends are enjoying the show.

Peterson is certainly aware of what Will has posted here. In the recent past, he has disappeared when I've confronted him with it. Perhaps this would be a good opportunity for Dr. Peterson to make clear either that he really enjoys what Will is doing on MDB or that he disdains it.

I'll PM him this post, asking a second time for his input.

Come on, Chris, do you really think you'll get an answer? Will's one of the guilty pleasures for these guys, like South Park. Would they really admit to enjoying Will's shtick?

Hey John--

I really do hope for a response. I find it hard to believe, frankly, that professional LDS scholars at FARMS actually enjoy watching Will shipwreck Mormonism on the basest, most disgusting, arrogant, insensitive, disgusting, inept, and repulsive shoals he's able to dredge up from within himself.

Surely Will's example is not an instantiation of Ballard's call for LDS to be cyber-missionaries.

Ironically sig-worthy heads-up, Will:

I hope that William Schryver's disgusting diatribes are made part of the missionary discussions. His behavior here actualizes reasons for investigators to flee from LDS missionaries. Does anyone on earth really want to embrace a religion that can produce such a foul soul?

Will is the consummate anti-Mormon: a presumably-faithful Mormon who routinely disgusts non-Mormons in the service of his faith.

Oh, wait, no one here is actually worthy of his faith. That's why he comes across as a low-life provocateur, perhaps.

And, if Will is to be believed, some of the best and brightest Mormon scholars are actually really into what he's doin'. I'd guess that he's a future patsy.

As I wrote to someone earlier this evening: Mormons don't produce anti-Mormons; Mormon apologists produce anti-Mormons.

So, yes, I would love for Dr. Peterson to drop in and provide his opinion of Will's cyber-missionary tactics.

Will he?

Remains to be seen. Perhaps he's one of Will's FARMS friends who just really likes the potty talk.

Chris

This is the heart of the matter, Chris. Will has repeatedly said that he isn't interested in helping people overcome their issues with Mormonism. Earlier in this very thread he said his purpose was to make fun of people. He's having a great laugh at others' expense, people who, as you put it, are not worthy of the LDS gospel.

Why anyone would take him seriously is beyond me. I'm all for his lowlife shenanigans, and I hope they reach a wide audience. They don't bother me in the least. He's trying to get a rise out of people, and it seems to be working.

I made the mistake earlier on in taking him seriously. He said things that at the time hurt deeply, and when I told him so, he told me he was "laughing [his] ass off" that I was hurt. That was when I stopped taking him seriously at all. I admit that his "pundit" posts on the Book of Abraham are a constant source of amusement for me, but I suspect he's doing the same over there, just trying to piss people off.

I don't expect DCP to openly criticize Will's behavior. I don't recall him ever openly criticizing Pahoran's behavior, and while Pahoran is not sexually vulgar the way Will is, he's certainly aggressive, combative, and rude. Very few believers were willing to criticize Pahoran's behavior, and most would only do it in a chat room, not in a post.

I think the most important thing to remember about Will is that he craves attention. He is An Actor, and apparently A Singer, too, and imagines he could achieve fame and adoration if only he cared about that sort of thing.
We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.

Beastie, I think you're spot-on here, and I also think Will is loving the brouhaha he's created on the board. He feeds on every bit of attention.

Maybe we ought to stop feeding him?
