good apologetics do really good with critics around. have you ever been to a fair conference and seen what goes on there? all the critics can do is walk around being polite to everyone and pretending to be everyones friend because they can't say anything against the apologetics.

I've read the apologetics on the FAIR website - a high school debate team could tear most of it to shreds.

Don't confuse real-life politeness with inability to debate.

I've been to FAIR and it's geared towards the believers as it should be. Most critics politely respect that and are not interested in blatantly stepping on other people's faith. This doesn't mean they're being thumped. Next time you go why don't you actually stop and talk to one about some of the apologetics being presented. It may be an enlightening experience.
