Romney Falls to Gingrich in SC

The Republicans could have reanimated the corpse of Ronald Reagan and he would have lost. The incumbent Republican president was the most unpopular in the history of measuring presidential unpopularity due to a range of issues from the Iraq war to Katrina. But most notably the economy was in a moderate recession that tipped over into a financial catastrophe the worst since the Great Depression. Incumbent parties tend not to do well in that environment. If you buy forecast modeling, and I do, McCain actually over-performed slightly.

It's sad that they don't realize that Gingrich is actually more liberal and morally not qualified compared to Romney.

That might be because in the spring of 2008, not as a presidential candidate, Gingrich aired his dirty laundry. It's been out there and available for 4 years. He confessed his 'sins'.

Romney on the other hand refuses to acknowledge he's ever made a mistake.

You clearly aren't following Romney very closely to say this. His actual mistakes he's confessed them many times over, even having an entire hour long program on Hannity going over nearly every accusation against him.

Problem is, like with anti-mormonism and liberalism, most of the things against Romney aren't true, and are liberal accusations that sadly many conservatives simply believe and adopt without taking the time to knowing the actual truth of the issue. Romney always was just as conservative as any other conservative. Yes, a couple of things he changed his views, but the change occurred entirely as it should have, not for politics contrary to claim.

Gingrich was the beneficiary of the deep seated prejudices and hatreds woven into the fabric of that region. Romney while still a bright knight to fiscal conservatives was himself a victim of social conservatism.

To a degree, but not even close to as much claimed, he was after all the Gov of a liberal state, thus many things claimed of him was not him at all.

This election will be a referendum on Obama. If the economy continues to show signs of life with continued job creation and unemployment percentage decrease (Obama would probably love to be around 7.5% by election season, currently at 8.5% from a height of 9.8% during the worst of the recession) he'll win. None of the Republicans can beat him on their own ability though since the entire field has large flaws.

It's also feared that Romney is out of touch with the average American since he's worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Gingrich on the other hand is only worth millions of dollars (to appeal to the struggling middle class), has had three wives (to appeal to social conservatives), and has been a Washington insider for 30+ years and thus is far more in touch with America (to appeal to those tea party types who want less government). Plus he's an angry white man who's not afraid to yell at the liberal media for being unfair towards bigots and appeasing lazy minorities with food stamps and health care (just like Rush Limbaugh, who every Republican really wants to vote into office).

Anger does have its appeal to the conservative voters. Just look at John McCain, Bob Dole, Richard Nixon and Barry Goldwater. Gingrich adequately fulfills that role. However, there is still the footage of Romney jumping out of his vehicle at the 2002 Winter Olympics and swearing like a sailor when he decided to help alleviate a traffic jam heading toward the Snowbasin Olympic venue. That and the firing of all those employees could help establish Romney's street credibility in the anger department.
