He then said that equality in the church is not the same as equality outside of it.

i've noticed.

It's nice that he admits it.

Follow the Prophet...

ONE of Scotland’s most elite men-only golf clubs yesterday insisted there were no plans to let in women.

Muirfield in East Lothian, the home of next summer’s Open Championship, are facing fresh criticism after Augusta National in America last week announced they were dropping their men-only policy.

Bosses of the famed home of the Masters are ending 80 years of gender discrimination by inviting former US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice and financier Darla Moore to become members.

But Scottish clubs such as Muirfield, the Royal and Ancient of St Andrews and Royal Troon all still bar women from joining.

On Friday, former prime minister Gordon Brown cranked up the pressure in a scathing attack on the Royal and Ancient’s refusal to allow women members.

But Muirfield secretary Alastair Brown yesterday insisted they had no plans to change.

He said: “The state of the membership of Muirfield is a private matter for the members to decide – it is not an issue for the outside world.

“Single-gender clubs cannot be classed as discriminatory.

“It is simply the freedom of people to keep their own company – men or women.

“There will be no imminent change here at Muirfield. To the best of my knowledge, it is not even on the agenda.”

Brown insisted that Muirfield’s policy as a private golf club is entirely in keeping with the law.

He added: “The Equality Act is very specific – it allows for gender-only private clubs.

“It comes down to this issue again: are men and women clubs not allowed to keep their own company? Are you not allowed to have a ladies’ gym club? Are you not allowed to have a ladies’ bridge club?

“As the law stands at the moment, yes, you are, and I see no sign of that changing.”

In fact, Muirfield claims to be among the most open and welcoming to visiting women golfers of all the private, men-only clubs.
