The fan apparently said he thought he was approaching a friend after the match and got the uniforms confused…
So he mistook the 5'9" black Duke player for BYU's 6'2" Hawaiian player... or one of the 21 white players.

Story checks out.

Its quite possible this has nothing to do with race. I can see that possibility. But that he got in the face of a volleyball player after the match may make this a gender issue thing. What's a grown male doing getting up in the face of a grown woman? I mean getting in the face of another man is ridiculous enough, but really? I'm not sure it matters what he said, he deserves to be banned. And that he did that doesn't bode well for him trying to defend himself against the accusations.

It is quite possible that this has more to do with Jussie Smollet than anything else.

When you say "he," who are you referencing? This game was broadcast. There is a multi-hour recording of the match. There were many people there, and yet the whole thing is a patchwork quilt of long-distance hearsay and BS.

So far... the story is problematic on many levels.

Really? So you think the Duke Volleyball player paid a friend to shout slurs at and harass her at a volleyball game? Is this based on anything other than your belief that black wooden be liars?

The police report confirms that the guy who was banned got in the Duke player’s face after the game. What’s your evidence that he’s actually a friend of the Duke player and she paid him to get in her face?

Them black folks are all liars, amIrite?

Odd narrative for a self proclaimed anti-bigot to push.

Those are stretches of what I think. The Jussie Smollet connection is that there there is a story of an event, and the witnesses as the come forward do not align with the media narrative. It is definitely problematic.

The guy that was banned.

Jesse Smollet paid friends to beat him up so he could pretend it was a racially motivated attack. To invoke the Smollet incident here reflects some seriously bigoted assumptions.

Wrong. The Jussie Smollett case involved a media firestorm based on falsified information or lies. To invoke some restraint in calling people racists before getting all the facts to support that claim is the opposite of making bigoted assumptions.

From a mirror site of the Trib:
During the second set of the bout, the officer noticed that the UVU student was not present when Richardson was serving, around which time Richardson’s family and Duke officials said insults were being shouted. Later, when she was serving again, he was playing on his phone, the officer wrote.
Something is definitely up. Either Duke was lying, severely confused, or there’s some sort of a cover up.
“I told the sports staff that I had never heard a single racist comment,” he wrote in his report. The officer reported that he also spoke to others there who said they had not heard any slander.
So far, Bisendorfer [BYUPD] also said, no one from the student department or anywhere else at last week’s volleyball match came to BYU police to report the person responsible for the slander. He also said that no one came forward to say he heard screaming during the match. appealed to the students who had heard the comments to come forward; They can contact the Police Department, he said, at 801-422-2222.
Holmoe [BYU AD] also said that BYU sent four guides and an officer to the stands looking for the person who said the racial slur, as he spoke during the interview with CNN on Monday.

So, is this real, a hoax, a conspiracy or just more keystone media BS?
Please quote the parts of the article that caused you to ask those questions.

I guess we ought to question whether he got up in her face too. I didn't notice that before, but it appears, the whole episode of him getting up in her face sounds more like officer's repeating what they were told by the player from Duke rather than confirming it as an incident.

I could buy this was more of a made-up incident then it first appears. I also could buy that some of it happened, if not all of it, as the Duke player suggests. I do think it's quite possible that a player feels threatened, thought they heard something they didn't, when the fan or fans didn't intend to threaten and also did not say what they are accused of. With clamoring noises it's quite possible any one could mistake what was said, even if they thought it was pretty clear to their ears. Banning a dude probably was necessary as a BYU response at this point, but it might be true that he nor anyone else really deserved it.

Racism allegations can be tough. There may not really be racism at all, but the mere allegation might, of necessity, be treated as if it really happened, because questioning it can appear insensitive, privileged and the like. And schools like BYU have to treat it as if it happened because it very well could have and we'd never know.
