Well, now I am depressed about Mother Theresa.

No Ray, he's in the Spirit Prison waiting for you to necro-dunk him because he's unworthy to rest in the arms of your God - yet. Get your religion straight.

You do well to be. It seems that the amount of public adulation that a religious figure attracts tells us little about their actual utility to the people whom, we are assured, they love. People are often depressingly inaccurate in their judgements on such matters.

Still, once you have learned that, the caution you gain will stand you in good stead.

I did not have a faith crisis. I discovered that the Church was having a truth crisis.

That's the problem with this supernatural stuff, it doesn't really solve anything. It's a placeholder for ignorance.

Hey EA

Perhaps my last post, for several reasons, in this thread.

EAllusion wrote:Good lord.

First of all, Hitchens made a small cottage industry out of criticizing well-liked people right after they died.

Understood, but please understand that this changes nothing concerning my view/opinion on "citicizing well-liked people right after they die".

That was one of his principle schticks. Given his admirable self-awareness, I think he would appreciate the symmetry and would be off-put by any sanctimony of leaving him untouchable because he just died.

Perhaps he would appreciate this (along with many other things that seem to be evolving in this thread). I don't happen to share that suggested "appreciation". Fair?

Second of all, I wasn't taking a shot at Hitchens at all.

I know!
You were using the event of his recent death (opportunity) to take a shot directed at something else entirely.

I'm an atheist who obviously does not believe that Hitchens is burning in hell. I was dismissively joking about the idea of him burning in hell with a supposedly saintly person that he was a fierce critic of. That's the kind of thing that celebrates who he was, not mocks him.

Yes, I clearly understood this too!

Peace,

Zip, zap, and he's gone. Might as well have said nothing. What was the bloody point of existing in the first place?

Sadly, this sums up religious people. Our lives here have no meaning. It is the afterlife we are all waiting for. Athesits/Agnostics believe they will live on in the works they did while alive. The point of existing is to live life to the fullest, and try to leave your mark on the world. It saddens me that religious folks put so little value on this life.

Hitchens did not merely 'comment' on Mother Teresa, he produced a well-researched book on her.

Hoop wasn't referring to a comment made by Hitchens.

Not merely leave a mark on the world, but make sincere attempts to make the world a better place for those who'll outlive you.

It's amazing how you and your brethren can so clearly and concisely summarize what religious people think. And then, in one paragraph mind you, you contrast religious thinking so starkly with what is the over-arching view of atheist/agnostic/humanists.

It is easy to do when their beliefs are drummed into your head daily for 30 years.
