You are. Right here, right now.

It's just that "jokes" along the lines of "All Mormons tell lies" or "Mormons are out of touch with reality" pretty much fall under the same genre as "jokes" about why Jews have big noses and how many people with hereditary suntans can hang from one tree. The only people that enjoy them are the local Imperial Wizard, the local Gauleiter, and the local Mormon-hater.

for what it's worth I think you act like a bully, Pahoran. I've met anti-Mormon bullies too but there's not much difference between them and the Mormon bullies.

I remember your ugly outburst because you said that about a friend who shared it with me. You have no sense of proportion.

And if you were to share a link to the thread in question, we would no doubt immediately see that you choose your friends because they tell "jokes" along the lines of "All Mormons tell lies" or "Mormons are out of touch with reality."

Nasty, bigoted jokes, in other words.

Which is no doubt why no link has been provided.

That is a flat-out lie. It was a joke about Mormon Scholars Testify, not a bigoted statement about all Mormons.

That was my first encounter with your online persona. You've just shown that it's worse than I thought.

In the minds of guys like Pahoran, there is no distinction to be drawn between defending themselves and defending Mormonism.

Pahoran wrote:So your idea of "standing up to bullies" is to Heroically "stand up" for those who, by your own admission, "dominate" this board.

I am beginning to think that you have lost whatever grasp on reality you might have had at one point in your life.

I have "stood up" for people on both sides of the belief divide, including those who don't believe and those who do.

And, as your quote clearly demonstrates, I was comparing those who post on this board with a specific group of believers--the ones who dominate over at MDDB. I can't possibly imagine anyone mistaking that hell hole with the average collection of good people with whom I attend church every Sunday.

Ever.

What I can see is that I have a good reason to think that you have lost your mind.

Tom wrote:I recall that Dr. Peterson highlighted the same article in an essay published in FARMS Review 12/2 (a revised version of a 1999 FAIR presentation posted here):

"[B]ack when the Washington D.C. Temple was dedicated, the student newspaper at nearby Georgetown University published a lengthy article in which some of its editors responded to their tour of the building during its open house. Their report was not favorable. At one point, they met the president of the new temple, a retired executive (as I recall) from the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Shaking his hand, the writer observed with unconcealed contempt, one could not overlook the fact that it was a hand that must have sold many sewing machines in its day."

The article I assume Dr. Peterson is referring to can be accessed here (pages 18-19 of the PDF). The writer notes that "the temple president describes the church's missionary program in terms of his experience as the manager of a business machine sales company: You don't criticize other religions, but sell your own product on its own merits....We are ushered into the temple offices, where the temple president greets us with a smile that must have sold thousands of business machines." The temple president had worked for Friden/Singer.

This is fascinating, Tom. It calls to mind Mr. Stak's examination of Dr. P.'s use of a quote from Camus. What I don't understand here is why he was apparently so incensed about what (to me) seems like a relatively benign article. And this is from, what, 1974? Talk about carrying a grudge! Prof. P. likes to blubber about my post that discussed his shenanigans on a trip to Israel back in the 1970s, and yet here he is, repeatedly bringing up this nearly 40-year-old article. Heck, I bet the person who wrote it doesn't even remember this, and doesn't have the foggiest idea that he successfully managed to royally piss off the "Kingpin" of the Mopologetic movement.

If there is one thing we know about Pahoran, it is that he is always completely convinced by whatever he happens to think at any given moment.

That says it all.

I don't recall making such a challenge.

He probably mixed you up with Brent Metcalfe.

You have to admit, that's kind of flattering.

Not to mention DCP, with his background in academics, had to have recognized the article was most likely written by a college-age journalism student. How pathetic is it that a middle-aged academician is so shallow and thin-skinned that he quoted something he pulled out of, what must be after forty years, his overflowing "Thou Offendeth Me" file, written by an immature student?

It certainly is revealing. Like his bashes in the mission field, this article makes the eternal grudge list in DCP's psyche. I would not imagine that he personalizes the grudges such that he thinks in terms of the individuals who crossed him and his faith, but they have evolved into psychic symbols of the war against this faith that he combats with all his faculties and energies.
