Drumdude, and others, at this point I can only think I really have no idea what you are talking about. I only today bothered to go read DP's story. I read a contrast between actual knowledge of the Holocaust and context of knowledge and the alternative of denial resulting from ignorance and desire. It is a significant if not novel observation.

What moral cautionary story are you talking about? To tell the truth I do not much relate to the sort of story you are referring to. Perhaps not my family. Perhaps the church changed after I escaped. I get the feeling church h expectations are projecting things into DP's story not naturally there.

I can see Morley's concern about the note on the portrait. It suggests things not told. I have no idea as to why it is of any concern when the SS troops left.
Yes, maybe it did. Or maybe it didn't and you just didn't have that type of completely and totally Mormon-driven family insanity that others experienced. Either way, lucky, lucky you.
It’s the unthinking pompous arrogance that drips from stories told by Mormon men that sets my teeth on edge. If Peterson wants to tell family anecdotes on his public blog, that’s fine. But when he uses those anecdotes to moralise, to point out that his Dad had higher morals than…well…it seems everyone else involved in World War 2…he can expect some pushback from those who see through the ploy. He’s free to put his blog behind a paywall if he doesn’t like the scrutiny.

Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

I was an absolute pro at writing and telling those fake stories that glorified the LDS priesthood leader, and I did so in every birthday, Christmas and Father's day card, as well as in multiple sacrament meeting talks, and various other writings.
Hold the phone. . . do you mean that you didn't just embellish the truth, but you invented false stories out of whole cloth?

If that's correct, would you mind sharing one of the fake stories you made up?

I'm guessing you mean World War 2?

Yes. The "unthinking pompous arrogance that drips from stories told by Mormon men" is exactly right.

Peterson’s anecdote about his father being used as a driver by an army Captain is not really an anecdote about his father. It’s really a story about pronouncing moral judgement on someone he knows nothing about. The story is all about the Captain’s assumed behaviour, and the unfairness of his purple heart. Peterson has no idea what the Captain's personal situation was. Nor does he know the exact nature of the relationship between the Captain and the person he met regularly (unless Peterson senior sneaked a peep through the window). Do we know the status of the relationship between the Captain and his wife back home? They may have been splitting up, they may have agreed an open marriage for the duration of the war, who knows what his personal situation was. The woman he met might have been an important military contact. Might have been a source of important information, was the Captain even a real person? etc. But Peterson junior doesn’t want to contemplate the nuance. He doesn’t want to ignore the Captain and just talk about his Dad’s experiences sat in the car observing London at night. Talk about what his Dad felt and did when the bombs dropped etc. (note: why did the building's windows smash but not the car in which Peterson senior was sat outside the building?) Did Peterson senior rush to the injured Captain’s aid? Did he go and help rescue people out of the rubble, etc.? So many potential stories about his father. But. The narrative is all about observing the Captain. He wants to focus on passing moral judgement, he wants to impose his own moral standards onto others because that makes himself feel superior.

“I was only there because the Captain couldn’t read a map and didn’t trust the train schedules, and somehow that made it my job to drive him three hours through the crater-pocked countryside just so he could knock on some married woman’s flat in London like he was delivering mail instead of adultery.

When the bomb hit, or near enough to count, it shattered the lady’s window and nicked his cheek so neatly he looked like a goddamn shaving commercial. They gave him a Purple Heart for that. Meanwhile, I’d been blown backward into the street like a sack of laundry and spent the next hour pulling dazed old ladies and a kid with a broken arm out of what used to be someone’s sitting room, all while the Captain moaned like he’d been crucified. Nobody gave me a medal. They gave me blisters and a headache and told me to drive the Captain back before supper.” Fib-22, Chapter 10

What speculation?
Notes like perhaps stolen valor or Paul Dunn stories strike me as gratuitous speculation. Your speculation about missing promotion because of aiding immoral behavior is more interesting, details of army regulation beyond my knowledge would be involved. If regulation indicate the Sergeant was breaking regulation it is interesting to wonder if that was ever negatively reported.
Even if the Captain was in London on official business, it’s still malappropriation of government property (the vehicle and fuel to drive to an affair partner’s flat) in addition to conduct unbecoming of an officer to direct an NCO to drive you over to your mistress’s apartment in order to knock boots. That more much so if you were in, near, or injured by a bomb blast that resulted in a Purple Heart.

“On or about April 14th, 1945 I directed my personal clown to drive me to London so I could liaise with a Mrs. Honeynuts. A German bomb exploded close enough to blow out the window I was standing in front of, smoking a post-coital cigarette, and I received a grievous wound to my face from the exploded glass. My clown, who I directed to keep watch on the street, can attest to the circumstances of my injury. In this view I and my clown feel like I merit the Purple Heart award, in service to not only our country, but ensuring some other man’s wife is serviced as well.” - Captain Richard Downs

Peterson added another interesting piece of information to the story when he was scurrying around correcting his Paris mistake from his previous anecdote.
19 July 1945 — We have a torn transport ticket from London bearing this date. Was my father in London in July? He never mentioned it. He had been stationed in London, or rather about halfway between London and Oxford in High Wycombe, before being sent to the continent, and, for certain reasons, I don’t believe that he ever went back.
How and why would Peterson senior have in his possession a transport ticket from London dated July 1945 if he hadn't been back to London since 1944? Perhaps the Captain wasn't the only one conducting secret liaisons...wouldn't that be a turn up for the books!

How did a German bomb hit London in April of 1945, when the last German bomb dropped on England was on 17 March 1945? The last V-1/V-2 rocket to hit England was on March 27, 1945.

Maybe they were spiritual bombs seen with spiritual eyes.
