RI I would almost kill to have this be a separate topic of it's own with you as a participant. As it stands, I will try to wade through other comments and stay on track with the sub-discussion that is taking place. I really appreciate being able to do this.

Note to myself, just ignore this. Faith/usefulness.

Part of what might limit faith's utility is when it self-imposes not looking at others ways of viewing the world. I can be self-limiting. It may make me a better person in one area, but prevent me from growing in another, unless it's a more openminded faith.

As far as philosophical frameworks to assume go, there are far superior ones, in my opinion.
Religion is for people whose existential fear is greater than their common sense.

The god idea is popular with desperate people.

Like what are those frameworks you're thinking about?

Well, evidence based thinking, in a nutshell.

If you’d like, I’d be interested in doing it when you have more time. One of the things that I puzzle over from time to time is how to think about religion. It’s not a topic that’s ever been straight-forward to me.

Thanks! I was hoping that you'd formally name something so I could read about it. I'm always up for a new topic if I can find one.

It's a busy week preceding Christmas for me but I will sure be taking a breather from it all throughout the day. I think you'd have to help me out and tell me how you define religion. And just go from there. Because if you ask me what I think religion is, it might be different than how you think about it yourself.

See that is kind of what I am after with coming into this thread. I'm not out to "win" anything, I want to see if there are similarities or differences in how we think about things...if there is anything we can resolve here. For as I said earlier, I see Gunnar and Schmo casting an LDS light over their comments. I know it when I see it and I think there are significant differences in how non-LDS believers conceptualize things. Or maybe there aren't any differences and I want to find that out.

Examples: The use of the word faith and references to the utility or usefulness of faith. I don't think I think of faith as having much use to me...or maybe I do? Also the concept of authority. I am not sure where authority fits in for them or for myself. I'd like a chance to go at that a bit. As I am doing whatever stuff I've been doing today, something is bubbling up and I want to write about it here. The problem with me (and who I inherently am) is that once I get started I end up in a state of introspection and my posts end up being "All about Jersey" which no one really wants to read and I understand that, but it's hard for me to stop once I get going but I still want to see where I end up. :-)

I want to know if my thinking has changed over the years...I think it has. I want to know if I've sorted somethings that I previously didn't have sorted.

And you know I kind of agree with this. I was wondering whether Jill Biden was a heart surgeon or oncologist. Then I found out the truth.
When and how did you find out the truth?
The way he finds out about all correct information: On this board. He states his opinion and people correct him.
