Umm, Schmo? You do know, don't you, that the quote in your sig line that you attribute to The Nehor actually comes from Phil Collins?

Pahoran

Of course. Collins was paraphrasing the Nehor. Duh.

Pahoran's right - Joseph had an insignificant number of wives, way less than fifty and a ridiculously small portion of them, no more than a dozen already had living husbands, so stop dissin' the Prophet.

Also, he didn't have sex with them despite the doctrine of polygamy being specifically for 'raising up seed'.

So there...

Some Schmo wrote:DNA testing also ruled out Jewish ancestory of Native Americans. Perhaps you haven't heard.

And Saint Simon of Southerton admitted that DNA testing would be highly unlikely to find the descendants of the Lehi colony given the likely population of Mesoamerica ca. 600 BC. Perhaps you haven't heard.

So, it's okay to have sex with minors in 1830s and 1840s, but it makes you a sexual predator in the 1970s? How does that work? Is your "presentism" bray just a way of identifying yourself as a moral relativist?

And don't try that children shtick with me. Joseph's wives testified in court to boffing the Lord's prophet, at the behest of the Church.

Did you know that people got married at much younger ages in the 19th century because of the shorter life expectancy? In 1850, the life expectancy for males at birth was only 38.3 years!

Did you know William Clarke had sex with a 16 year old girl?
Did you know Edgar Allen Poe had sex with a 13 year old girl, who was his cousin?

You really need to keep things in perspective.

So when Moroni told Joseph that the golden plates contained the story of the source of 'the inhabitants of this continent' did he not mean North America, the continent on which he was visiting?

Ooooooohhhhh! Well, that makes me want to be LDS again! All this time, I thought the Book of Mormon was set in the good ol' USA. I wonder what possibly gave me that idea...

CFR, please, that "Most of Joseph's early wives were already married to other men." Please note that, in normal English usage, "Most" means "more than half."

Note also that "early," given his death in 1844, would need to be before Nauvoo.

And while you are at it, please provide references to reliable sources that demonstrate that any of the known sealings were marriages in fact.

Perhaps you haven't heard, but DNA testing of possible Joseph Smith descendants from plural wives has ruled him out.

Pahoran

Great, so these exceptions to the norm would make you perfectly comfortably in marrying off your 14-year-old to a man in his late 30s.
