I think that "showing skin" here is so natural, particularly in summer, that no really gives it a second thought. Which is why this brought quite a reception:

Muslim leader blames women for sex attacks (Note, though, that many Muslims disagreed with the Sheik's comments. We should be wary of stereotypes.)

I would imagine that for some people, anything short of a burqa is "walking pornography."

I think I understand where you're coming from.

But I also think that there must be a general acknowledgement of the fact that young men and young women are very much sexual beings.

It's a human thing.

I think there's far too much energy expended in an effort to ignore and suppress that reality. Sure, teach kids to be smart and (I believe) to wait to engage in sexual activity until they have really become mature enough to enter into those kinds of relationships.

But teaching kids to fear and suppress and view as "evil" the natural feelings of becoming an adult human being? I'm sorry, but that's wrong. Sure, there are proper times and places and improper times and places to talk about sexuality. Or even to joke about it, for that matter. But when I read some of the things Susan Bednar has said ... I see a really unhealthy and likely damaging philosophy towards sexuality. I sure wouldn't want my kids to view sexuality in those terms.

True. And I don't have a problem with sexy or utilitarian.

The funny thing is she uses a turtleneck as an example of inappropriate attire. A turtleneck? Like what Velma wears on Scooby-Doo? Isn't a turtleneck the stereotypical attire for prudes?

Are you kidding me???

Look at these! I will always regret getting rid of the 70s black turtleneck I inherited from my mom. Dammit.

I like this quote from the article:

"If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat?

"The uncovered meat is the problem."

The sheik then said: "If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred."

He said women were "weapons" used by "Satan" to control men.

"It is said in the state of zina (adultery), the responsibility falls 90 per cent of the time on the woman. Why? Because she possesses the weapon of enticement (igraa)."

Maybe why me is this Sheik in real life. I especially like the meat analogy and think it would make a wonderful object lesson. Have any women on this board used a piece of meat and a cat as an object lesson for Young Women? You also need some saran wrap. One piece of meat is covered, and the other isn't. which one is in danger of being eaten by the cat?

Turtlenecks are gorgeous.

I'm not convinced. You need to post more pictures.

MsJack wrote:I find it pretty sad that Ms. Bednar's first course of action was to blame herself instead of the two young men, but I've come to expect as much from LDS leaders. I hear far too much talk of covering the women up and barely any talk of telling men to take responsibility for their own thoughts.

.

And of course, such a sweater today would be considered modest. I think that her message for the girls today was basically this: take care of the clothing you wear because your clothing can send a message. Now LDS men are also taught not just to see women just as sexual beings but as human beings. Girls are more than just a body. Not a bad teaching at all.

And the message to girls is: Develop your inner beauty because this inner beauty will reflect your outer beauty. And because of this you do not need to wear revealing clothes to stress your body.
I intend to lay a foundation that will revolutionize the whole world.
