TKR Take two or...In which the Boy gets another new knee

Keeping track of the recovery timeline here. Looking through the previous documentation here was a great reminder and I hope this will also be useful to anyone in a similar post op recovery. I'll try to keep my sense of humor. If not, please forgive.

Today was surgery day for the other Total Knee Replacement. All went well and I'd like to say that he's resting and dozing off on pain meds in the recliner but that's not how it works. He's making phone calls.

Ice machine is doing its job. We can't find the velcro wrap (yet) so of course we pulled out the duct tape. Duct tape can fix anything.

His brain isn't fully operational yet. Not providing details.

God help us all and the Jersey Girl.

p.s. Alexa won't answer you if you cuss at her. It wasn't me.

I’m glad to hear that surgery went well. Maybe I’ll follow Alexa’s strategy every time a patient curses at me.

Yeah, no response sometimes speaks volumes.

Day #1

Don't remember. Too busy.

Day #2

Went off in the walker without his helper. Fell in the hallway. No clue how we got him up off the floor--teamwork and tons of effort on his part.

Day #3 (yesterday)

Utter and complete hell. Just like last time. It must be a rule.
Lost balance using walker but leaned on a chair.

Day #4 (today)

Turned a corner (like last time) but starting PT today so expect pain later and tomorrow. No idea how to get him into the car this time because of it's a different leg. (describe this here later)

Using full dose of pain meds this time instead of toughing it out. Good results for pain management. Affects memory.

Reminders to sit when rising (mornings/after nap) and do NOT move without assistance.

Ability:

Walk with a walker.
Get in and out of bed with assistance. (I have to lift 2 legs at one time)
Take a shower with assistance.
Toileting with helper nearby.
Stand in front of sink to wash up.
Walker to make own coffee in kitchen.
Yells at his helper when frustrated.*

Healing:

Incision looks great.
Swelling is minimal. (Probably will swell with PT work outs)

Equipment in use:

Walker with tote bag made for it
Leg grabber to raise own leg.
Grabber tool to pick up things.

Ice machine used intermittently.
Wrap with frozen insert over night.
NO electronic compression massage cuffs this time.

TED hose for compression.

*His helper deserves a gold medal or maybe a prize of some sort.

Did you record it so that you can both watch and have a good laugh about it next week?

Over here, it is don’t try to carry stuff in your hands while you’re wobbly walking with the cane. Occasional back on the rollator. Doing better stepping off of or up onto the step or curb with the strong leg. Neurosurgeon said don’t bother with PT right now. Imaging and follow up appointments scheduled for 4/30. Awaiting the injection appointment which likely will not help, but if it is the next step, so be it. I’d be wonderful if it helped, but the previous one didn’t help. Maybe it is a you have to wait so many weeks between surgeries thing. I should really ask more questions. Reminding self, the Lord has led us thus far.
