How many people are in your class and what age are they Nehor?

Isn't it a Young Adult class, Nehor? (ages 18-25)

18-30. I average about 30-40 in my class. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

I suggest we analyze my posting leading to your obsession. The word being defined is depression:

Here's a few definitions:

Me after spending too long on these boards. ;)

My previous loser roommate.

People who need meds and don't take them.

Not enough electroshock therapy.

And Beastie said I was clueless.....HA!!!! Take that.

Where did I callously mock an affliction? Two of my definitions were self-deprecating and the other two were jokes. Note the sarcastic victory at the end.

From this we can draw one of three conclusions:

1. You've had electroshock therapy and it didn't work

or

2. You're an illiterate and are mashing random keys on your computer

or

3. You're taking offense where there is none in a cowardly attempt to sway people against me.

My personal theory is number 2 until new evidence surfaces.

The Nehor said:

Antishock, a small correction.

In your signature you said that I said:

"Not enough electroshock therapy." is my suggestion on how to cure homosexuality. I actually said that, "Not enough electroshock therapy." is a good definition for some depressed people along with a host of other conditions causing the affliction."

Just an FYI.

The Nehor said in relation to someone afflicted with depression:

It was mostly a joke because the person in question might have been an unworthy wretch.

Everyone familiar with Mormon topics knows that Greenwood used electroshock aversion therapy in an attempt to "cure" homosexuals of their "affliction". When The Nehor suggested said that, "Not enough electroshock therapy." is a good definition for some depressed people along with a host of other conditions causing the affliction.

To claim that he wasn't suggesting homosexuals don't get enough electroshock therapy to deal with their "affliction" which causes their depression is insulting.

The Nehor, you owe everyone on this board an apology for your vile suggestion that ANYONE for ANY reason needs electroshock therapy. Shame on you.

You need electroshock therapy. :)

Edit: I should add I have never been to medical school and this is amateur advice. I am not responsible for any coma, heart failure, sudden gains of perspective/sanity, death, or halitosis this may cause. Consult your Home Teacher before use.

beastie wrote:This is a topic that has been discussed before, and I don't have much new to add. Depression often entails feelings of guilt over being depressed, and I believe LDS teachings exacerbate that tendency. I've been cleaning out my basement this summer, and happened upon one of my missionary journals from the MTC. Therein, I found recorded, very succinctly, a summary of what I had been taught as a Mormon regarding depression:

The mighty change of heart is when you really realize who you are and the joy of knowing what you can become. If you're depressed, you're deceiving yourself somehow, covering a sin.

Note to believers: please do not derail this thread with a discussion of whether or not this is "doctrine" or some sort of official teaching. I do not care, and it doesn't make a whit of difference in regards to the impact of a teaching. This is what I was taught as LDS - there is something almost sinful about being depressed.

I know my parents discouraged seeing a nonMormon psychologist. This made things difficult. I think the Church has discouraged psychological counselling in favor of ecclesiastical counseling in the past. I found things about the Christian belief system, at least many peoples interpretation, very depressing. It's very hard to break out of when you find yourself in that situation. If everything sounds good to you and you like it you're fine. If it doesn't and you can't change that, you're in for a difficult time.
And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

I wrote of this little thing about dealing with depression [I think Liz or someone said something or other...I'm rambling.] Let me know if anyone agrees with what I'm thinking on the subject.

Is it okay if we quote your piece or would you rather us just refer to it? I don't see how anyone could disagree with a single thing you wrote about.

Sure. Check it again, cause I just added a couple more paragraphs.
