Dr. Shades wrote:Regarding the assertion that pornography makes the consumers view the performers as "one-dimensional" and renders them unable to appreciate her (or his?) other talents, my response is, "no freakin' kidding!" I'd like my religious friends to sincerely answer the following question: When you hire a plumber to come to your house to fix a leaky faucet, do you concern yourself with his poetry-writing skills, or do you only value the service for which you hired him? Yeah, I thought so.

If the plumber turns out to be my next-door neighbor, then I would concern myself with his poetry-writing skills. If I watched porn and my next-door neighbor turned out to be a star, then I might not notice that she's a talented linguist.

Also, it is my understanding that there is a fair amount of violence associated with the sex industry. Is it a logical consequence of the industry? I would say it is not, but things are what they are and I think that violence is a symptom of exploitation.

Then that's indicative of your own immaturity, not of any inherent flaw with pornography itself. I have a healthy attitude and appreciation of the pornographic arts, so if I ever knew a porn star in real life, I would view that as nothing more than her "day job"--for that's quite literally all it is. I'd appreciate her humanity just as much as I appreciate anyone else's.

Also, it is my understanding that there is a fair amount of violence associated with the sex industry.

Let's not confuse "the sex industry" with the more narrowly-defined "pornography industry."
"Finally, for your rather strange idea that miracles are somehow linked to the amount of gay sexual gratification that is taking place would require that primitive Christianity was launched by gay sex, would it not?"

If I had to choose between polygamy and pornography, I'd say polygamy is worse. One is fantasy, the other is abusive reality.

I bet you'd notice if she were a cunning one, however.

At any rate, if you lived next to a porn star, and once you found out that's what she did for a living, all you saw in her were tits and ass, I'd think the lesser of you. You have the opportunity to get to know her as a whole person, and forgo that? Your fault, not hers.

I'm not sure I believe that there is a lot of violence associated with the porn industry, except perhaps in the niche of violent porn, and then yeah, I guess there is. Not my cup of tea, and is way closer to the secular "thou shalt not cross" line, IMHO. But Playboy isn't to blame for a niche other people create and fill.

An aquaintence was busted by his wife looking at porn and whacking off. His TBM wife actually considered whether she should divorce him for it, but eventually, magnanimously, decided to forgive him and not tear their family apart. But that was only even a real consideration in her own mind, because of the way the TBM culture has turned looking at another person's naked body, and manipulating one's own genitalia, into "crimes" second in seriousness only to murder. It's really quite ridiculous though. I think TBM women everywhere would freak out if they knew just how many of their husbands had ever masturbated, or still do. It's been turned into a mountain, when it shouldn't even be a mole hill.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

And I'd agree with you that it would be my fault. I'm not blaming the victim (porn star) here. I'm saying she's on the losing end because of how others view her, even if that is their issue, not hers.

Some of them freak out in a similar way when a spouse apostatizes. I seem to recall a likeable poster from this board who had something like that happen to him. Anyhow, if religion is hokey then freaking out is illogical whether it's over apostasy or porn. But if religion is correct, maybe there is a good reason to be concerned about porn and apostasy--then there's a potential forced divorce in the afterlife in that case. I'd say that's serious buisness.

Polygamy is no more inherently abusive than porn if it's just among consenting adults. And that's the key, are those who practice polygamy freely consenting adults?

Does an angel with a drawn sword say, "you must watch porn or lose your salvation"??

Did you become a consumer of the pornographic arts pre-mission, post-mission, or during your mission? Pre-apostasy or post-apostasy?

by the way, do you know if Scratch is or ever has been LDS? He keeps evading the question every time I've seen someone ask him.

Scratch perfers to keep the discussion centered on the subject, not on his personal information.
