Part of the issue is that Emma is considered "old news" among apologists. It's generally known and accepted that Emma was not happy with Josephy's polygamy (even a lot of so-called "chapel Mormons" are aware of it), and so many apologists and historians tend to ignore the issue because they don't have anything "new" to say, and it is important to have something "new" to say when you are trying to get attention (and a publisher) for your research. I find Emma fascinating myself. Mormon Enigma was very good, but I think that a great deal of new material could be written about Emma. Hopefully, Blixa will find the time soon.

No kidding . . . complaining or even mentioning Joseph's polygamy meant speedy excommunication and ostracization.

just me wrote:For all we know the locked up pioneer journals are full of complaints! That is a lot of supressed evidence about the early days of the church and the Joseph Smith time period.

I'd start with William Clayton's diaries myself if I had supernatural powers.

I am tempted to start a sock puppet named Nomadknowsmyhistory that is very critical of Emma just to motivate Blixa.
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

Thanks for that vote of confidence, Cicero, but it won't be me doing that work. I have to keep myself very focused for the next couple of years and anyway I probably have more work in the pipeline than I have years to live. I don't really even have the expertise a person would need for that task.

But, I really want to see more work done on Emma and I'm more than happy to contribute with scholarly encouragement and support.

Edited to add: et tu, Fence Sitter? C'mon, that's not helping me! I gots enuff on my plate!!!

If anyone is interested, here is the portion of Daniel Wells's letter to Joseph F. Smith that discusses Esther Dutcher Smith:

It would be nice to know what is in the redacted part.

Thanks for that Nevo. How common is it for a museum or a library to redact a letter that is more than 130 years old?

I am sad that there is a big chunk blacked out.

How can I get my hands on Quinn's June 2012 response?

The best way is to ask Fence Sitter or Just Me to email a copy to you.

Or me. I can send you a copy, too.
