Well, yes it does have merit. The "spike" atop the head is a jackal ear. There is no question about that. The eye is that of a jackal. It consumes a great portion of the skull. You'll note there isn't a human ear or even room to include a human ear. All creatures have an ear whether they are dogs or humans. So, you're pretty much left to conclude that the "spike" really is a jackal ear and since he's a jackal he should have a snout -- after all, he's a jackal.

How can Anubis make protection in the embalmers house if he doesn't even have a nose? How can he smell? How can he function? It doesn't make sense that jackal headed Anubis doesn't have a nose. It goes against nature. It goes against everything the Egyptians held dear. It goes against common sense. The original vignette had to have had a proper jackal head. We have a proper Osiris. We have a proper Isis. We have a proper Maat. Now let's have a proper Anubis to accompany the gods.

Joseph Smith removed the snout for a reason. Can you tell me why he did that?

I think what is obvious is too much for the true believer to accept. The question is why are the "prince" and "slave holding the "waiter" ? Did Abraham complain about the service? Why does the Prince have the Maat feather?

Believers, including Benjamin McGuire, have to find ways to come to terms and accept things on faith in order to continue to support their testimonies of Mormonism. Benjamin is working things out in his own way and continues to study the issues carefully.

The idea that there is a waiter and slave on the scene is entirely Joseph Smith's own idea. Smith came up with those concepts. Smith also came up with ideas of what he professed the hieroglyphic writing was saying. He claimed to translate and interpret it. Mormons are the ONLY people on this earth that have the least amount of respect for the Explanations of Facsimile No. 3. The rest of the world finds it repugnant. The Egyptians are rolling in their graves -- unhappy with what Smith has done with their sacred religious writings and beliefs.

Anyway, the gods are ushering justified Hor into the presence of lord Osiris. It's an Egyptian ceremony.

What is the significance of the feather? Something to do with scales?

Her ostrich feather represents truth. A feather of truth on one side of Thoth's scales and the heart on the other must be balanced in order to be found vindicated before Osiris. Such is an Egyptian rite in order to obtain an eternal afterlife. In other words our hearts must be true to ourselves and honest in all our dealings.

Do you have a suggestion for a book that explains the various figures?

Now days you can read a lot of stuff on line for free. Try and find websites that are authored by Egyptologists or credible enthusiast but stick to conventional Egyptology. Wikipedia itself will give you basic rundowns on a lot of stuff about Egyptology -- you can just hop about on different topics and learn a lot from that alone. There are so many popular books on Egyptology available online. You've got to find what catches your eye and what you find interesting.
