Be loyal to the Church under all circumstances. I make you a promise that the authorities of this Church will never lead you astray. They will lead you in paths of happiness" ("A Prophet's Counsel and Prayer for Youth," Ensign, Jan. 2001, 9). Explain that another great blessing is having a living prophet on the earth. Bear your witness of the prophet and testify that the leaders of the Church will indeed "lead you in paths of happiness." Sing "Latter-day Prophets" (p. 134).

Sounds like the old adage is alive and well. The prophet will never lead you astray.

And the apologists say it isn't taught in the church today. Bull****.

Oh Man! I've been digging though a pile of my old Children's Friends from the 60's and its amazing how nearly non-denominational they are. Oh sure there are some Book of Mormon references and also some standard Jesus stuff BUT most of the issues are just like any other children's magazines of the era: Jack and Jill or The Golden Magazine. Just fun stories and crafts and games. The stories mostly have morals, but they are pretty broad (treat everyone kindly, help animals) and some are strictly entertainment with NO religious/moral tie-in.

I (almost) wish this were true. I might even be among those who'd capitulate to the brute force of Latter-day revelation if only GBH would utter something remotely prophetic rather than make jokes about how's he's going to go against tradition (hah!)--as he did in his most recent GC address--and talk about the wonderful history of the LDS Church--again, as he did.

It is only since the LDS prophets stopped issuing definitive statements about controversial topics that they can be said to "never lead you astray." It's hard to lead one astray when one doesn't have a definable position on matters of doctrinal importance. ("I don't know that we teach that...")

Didn't BY lead his church astray while teaching Adam-God? Didn't Joseph Smith lead his parishioners astray in the KSSABC debacle? Didn't Kimball lead his church astray while assuming and teaching the hemispheric theory of NA origins (the Lamanites/Indians "are fast becoming a white and delightsome people")?

It's odd that this refrain is still prevalent (that the leaders will never lead you astray), when LDS history compels apologists utterly to discount the teachings of past leaders as mere opinion--opinions that, if one countenanced them, would surely lead one astray. (See, in this respect, BRM's "Seven Deadly Heresies.")

The thing is, if our leaders were indeed inspired seers and revelators, we would indeed be happy! THe problem is not that they are leading us astray. The problem is they aren't leading us at all!

Not a doctrinel thing, just people lost money.

Well I guess but this seem minor really. Of course this is not a settled issue in the Church. FARMS may promote a LGT but many leader do not buy it and hold to the hemispheric model. So maybe that are correct.
