This NEEDS to be resurrected, especially with the Vogel/Lindsay debate going on. This is fascinating and I spent the day researching it and will have some interesting comments to make in the near future. All is not what it seems here and the level of deception being perpetuated by Lindsay and Gee on this is astounding.
It is basically find a place name from one of Smith's "revelations" and something that marginally resembles the name on an ancient map or from an ancient discovery and then proclaim it "may be promising" or what ever then all of the apologists pick up on that and proclaim it a Book of Mormon or ABR MATCH and keep repeating it ad nauseam!
Gee did it with this, but NOW, years later is writing like it's a FACT! It's like he convinced himself that this crazy BS is really true!
Anyway, enjoy this, this is RUNTU in rare form! Thanks a lot for this, my friend!
From Lindsay, and this is nauseating:

Riding on a speeding train; trapped inside a revolving door;
Lost in the riddle of a quatrain; Stuck in an elevator between floors.
One focal point in a random world can change your direction:
One step where events converge may alter your perception.

Well, and then again, this is over 10 years old too........ but agreed, I am curious as to what Van Seters and Thompson have to say on this. I have a few of their Abraham materials and none of us as apologists even knew they existed.......I suspect the case is not as tight as the apologists would like us to believe it is. Nothing of theirs ever is.
I think you're right though Grindael, they find a name that is somewhere in the ball park and make sure it is on a map and then with a little linguistic hocus pocus, BLAM! Confirmation. Nibley did this endlessly. I remember talking about Nibley's "prowess" as a linguistic scholar with John Tvedtnes and he showed me several items that Nibley simply didn't do correctly at all. And they were the coolest ones too. I actually asked him why are you taking away all of Nibley's good stuff for? He replied something like, well, we want to see the actual situation historically and linguistically. Nibley got a bit over enthusiastic...
