Conversation with my mom

I flew to AZ over the weekend to visit with my mom.

While there, I logged on here to catch up a bit.

I was reading Beastie's thread about Believing in Mormonism requires believing in..... The following conversation ensued...

Mom: "Whacha reading over there?"
Scottie: "Oh, I'm reading about how Joseph Smith used a stone in his hat to search for hidden treasures in the earth when he was an adolescent. Then he claimed that the treasure sunk deeper in the earth, or that ghosts were guarding them."
Mom: "Those are anti-Mormon lies! Why do you read those horrible web sites?"
Scottie: "Actually, this information is available in books you can buy at Deseret Book."
Mom: "How do the authors of these books know what happened? I don't believe it."
Scottie: "That's pretty closed minded of you to just out and out disbelieve something because it doesn't fit in your belief system. Don't you think you should read the source before you discount it entirely?"
Mom: "NO! I KNOW the church is true!"
Scottie: "How does the church being true have anything to do with whether Joseph Smith used a peepstone to search for buried treasure?"
Mom: "Because I don't believe Joseph Smith would do such a thing."
Scottie: "So it doesn't matter to you that ......"

* At this point, Mom was quite obviously uncomfortable with the conversation. She blatantly turned to DH and asked him about dinner, thus cutting off any further dialog. Testimony in firm check.

So, all you TBM's out there can list your resume of wards and callings about how you have NEVER heard it taught that church history is comparable with anti-Mormonism. For whatever reason, there is an INCREDIBLE fear of the history of the church and of Joseph Smith. White washing is alive and well.

Nah, your mother is another one of those slackers who sluffed sacrament meeting (or seminary, or R.S. or...) the day that they taught about that. Obviously she is exceptionally lazy, and if she had listened, she would already know about this stuff.

I noticed this some 25 years ago. Its only the sophisticated verbal and literary padding some critics are capable of that makes it appear substantive.

I didn't hear it in my sixyrs investigation, and my wife - who teach the SS teachers, I don't know the definition of this calling - didn't hear it. When I mentioned it, her answer was "this is one of the dirts of your liar internet". In Hungary this was never taught, was never mentioned.

Um... I don't know about you, but this post could best be described as "so convoluted" that I feel like I did just fall down a rabbit hole trying to make sense of what you said.
