One thing that I just can't fathom is how members base such incredibly life altering decisions on the spirit.
A common argument used by critics is that this same spirit is testifying the truthfulness of thousands of other religions. The apologist answer is that the spirit is testifying of the specific truths in those religions. This in itself should be enough to wake any normal person up.
However, we now add another layer on top of this. The false witnessing within Mormonism.
How many times have you heard some bogus, BS story in F&T meeting, and then heard later how the spirit witnessed to bro/sis so-and-so that it was true? I've heard it several times. Tarski's wife's story comes to mind.
Now, perhaps I'm just being too skeptical and all of these incredibly outlandish tales really DID happen, and the spirit was telling the truth, but more realistically, the stories were greatly exaggerated, if not completely fabricated.
So, now we have the spirit witnessing that these falsehoods are true.
What does it actually take to make believers say, "Hey, this spirit thing is entirely unreliable! Maybe I'll make up my own mind!"??
