Is FAIR/MAD Hypocritical?

Post by _Gadianton »

There is a new thread over on FAIR which gives us a little more insight into the apologetic psyche. I don't really follow MAD much, but the owner of the board is distraught over a group of LDS on the board sympathetic to polygamy. It kind of reminds me of a situation I was in a few years ago. It rained like crazy in those days and the weeds would shoot up, sometimes it would seem like only days before they were waist high. Once the rain would stop, I'd spray them with weed killer, and then after they dried out, I'd take the weed-wacker to them and finish the cleanup. But then, a few weeks or months later, it would rain again, and a new kind of weed, different from the previous would shoot up in the space created. I went through three or four different sets of very different looking, odd weeds during that very rainy time.

Now that MAD has banned all the critics, in the space for opposition left open, it would appear a number of Mormons have gathered, Chapel Mormons, possibly, who hold beliefs in Mormon doctrines like polygamy that Internet Mormons find embarrasing. Now, do you all remember as I do, not so long ago the moderators at FAIR making a big to-do about how MAD is a forum by Mormons, FOR Mormons, and that the critics are on thin ice from the get-go? This owner of the board explicitly refers to these LDS who believe in the eventual return of polygamy as TBMs. Acknowledging their place in the church. Yet now, the lie is revealed, for FAIR/MAD is not a place "for Mormons", because these TBMs are now being told to leave MAD alone and get their own board. As we all already knew, MAD is a place for Internet Mormons and apologetics. In fact, these "TBMs" are being castigated as worse than critics!

A further irony, is that a key charge being leveled at these TBMs, is that they "denigrated statements from modern prophets and apostles." Wait?! What happened to every member a prophet? What happened to the "prophets of the pew," free to get their own inspiration from the Holy Ghost to determine doctrine? It would seem that the apologists hold some hefty double standards! Only apologists are allowed to say, "He was speaking as a man! It was only his opinion!"

Could you tell us the name of that thread?

I am completely unsurprised. They have a long track record of marginalizing members who see things a little differently.

I haven't made a close study of your posts bc. There are good and bad things about both internet Mormons and chapel Mormons. just from what I'll admit isn't a very sharp memory of your contributions here, i'd say that if you took some of the worst thinking of the chapel Mormons, and combined it with the most disqusting parts of internet Mormonism, that would sum up your positions pretty well. I don't quite understand it. I don't think you're a bad person and you do not register on my radar as someone who I might have disdain for - hence my recollections may be off here as your posts would be less likely to become seared in my mind. I don't recall ever becoming infuriated with anything you've written. And, from what you've dropped about your personal life, you must be an intelligent person. Is there perhaps an engineer's lack of social maturity at work? Someone who's good at math's disinterest in taking any other kind of thinking seriously? Perhaps. I'd have to think about it more.

Wow, Bee Eff is really taking Juliann to the woodshed on that thread.

You are throwing out red herrings at an accelerated rate. If I missed something in between the flying fish my apologies. Kamen has already provided a link, you aren't tuning in and I'm not even going to try to keep up with the diversions anymore.

Board Guidelines

If you are asked for documentation or given a call for references you are required to provide it.

To date, no one has been able to supply that yet the campaigning continues despite the growing body of authoritative declarations that it will not be coming back.

Call for references on the bolded portion. Please quit ignoring/sidestepping this, on this forum a call for references is a mandate not a request, provide the references or state that you were incorrect.

Consider this your third CFR for the exact same claim.

I saw this interesting thread earlier in the day and just about PM'ed the moderators to ask them to restore my posting priviledges. Naturally, I wanted to comment about the "hypocrisy" or as I would put it, the "irony" of current MADB witch hunting. To date they've thinned down to the most irenic of critics (Scottie, John W, CK, CKS....) so the board owner has to designate an ill-defined segment of TBMs for purging! So incredible, yet quite predicable as well now that I think about it. Hence, it's too late to ask "what's next...?" because this is it!

Best of all is the preface about MADB being (possibly) the most popular LDS message board in the entire internet (echoes of a mythical Al Gore, I think). Yet MADB is in danger of a hijacking by TBMs who maintain belief in doctrines of old. No longer are mere threads in danger of hijacking. No, the founder of MADB fears that the entire board, the most popular board in all of internetland, will be hijacked by fundamentalist insiders. Homegrown fundamentalist insiders, who hold the prophets of old to their word until teachings on polygamy are explicitly disavowed by those with authority to do so.

Quite a dramatic and fitting turn of evolution, I think. Has anyone called anyone else "apostate" yet?

Were the Nephites in a small area or all over the Americas? What is DCP's favorite brand of donut? Here is a third tie-breaker question: U&T or Hat and Stone?
