Is Bill Maher serious?

Post by _dartagnan »

I know there will be a ton of people here excited about his new movie "Religulous" which bashes religion in the spirit of JAK.

But Maher was on "The View" yesterday and he went off on a rant that said some pretty stupid things, such as the Christ story being "the exact" story of the ancient God Horus who also resurrected a man named Lazarus.

What horses***. I addressed this issue on this forum back in January. It seems clear Maher is a product of internet ignorance. He is regurgitating stuff from that online movie called Zeitgeist.

Before I always thought Maher was smart and just shared a different view, but now I think he is a bonafide idiot and a bigot.

I can't wait to see it. They play movies like that at an indie theater downtown. Across from the theater is a nice little bistro where I can get some wine and cheese before the movie. So, my Friday is set.

I'm a little surprised you shared such a strong opinion about Bill Maher that springs from a movie you haven't seen, yet. I think what you don't like about atheists is most likely the same behavior they don't like about you, ie, the tendency to view others as idiots and morons for not seeing reality as you see it.

Why not see the movie before you shoot the messenger?

I watch Bill Maher regularly,
If he were run for president, I'd vote for him hands down.
He is neither an idiot nor a bigot.
Story of Jesus is a carbon copy of Horus, Isis, Marduk and a dozen or more compiled in a fictitous four Gospels.
Bill Maher has every right to ridicule, trample Christian or other religions as he sees fit.
My wife hates him, she can't stand watching him also. He is just another American Media product.
You don't like him, don't watch him.

PS: here a link about ancient sacred Text archives, see how many of them resembles Christianity.

Bill Maher has an incredibly simplistic understanding of religion. Indeed, I would say he is largely ignorant of the matter. I do not buy his recent claims on NPR that religion is responsible for tribalism. Human nature is to form communities and define the boundaries that distinguish themselves from others. If it's not religion doing it, it's politics, if it's not politics, it's sports, if it's not sports, it's philosophy.... usw.

I look forward to seeing Bill Maher's movie to be both entertained and outraged.

He is neither an idiot nor a bigot.

He is both, and he only wishes he could be as funny as Dennis Miller, who seems to be his mentor. I remember when he started copying Miller's version of "the news." It just wasn't the same.

Would it matter to you if what you just said was not true? I doubt it. In any event, it isn't true. It is pure horses***.

Maher is just one of many atheists who are so pissed off at life because they haven't had an experience with the divine. So they feel left out, and they get frustrated, so it makes them feel better to howl at the moon, and create this illusion that says the vast majority of the planet needs to be admitted to a mental institution while they feel smarter than the rest.

The fact that most of his fans are of the South Park variety, isn't surprising.

antishock, I didn't say anything about his movie. I said he's an idiot because of what he said about Horus. I've always known he was anti-religious and liberal. I never thought he was an idiot until he started using "internet scholarship" produced by some blow hard teenager with a powerpoint program, to make his case.

Zeitgeist is horses***.

The funny thing is, the same crew who started this Horus=Jesus crapola, in the same movie they say George Bush is repsonsible for 9-11, which Maher says is horses***.

You're a bigot and an idiot.

Is this how the Maher defenders respond to the fact that he's lying?

"No he's not, you are!"

Wow. I guess Maher's position is more bankrupt than I thought.

The pure Horses*** lie in the Gospels, hell, I really do not care if you buy the story of Jesus walking on waters, exorcising Demons, raising people from dead...Those to me are the purest b***s***!
You know why? Because it doesn't happen.
Nowadays we have science, we don't call afflicted people seized by demons, who sends pigs to their deaths for being beset by demons?
I didn't see some people walking on water in Galveston Bay to save their lives when they were swept to the sea.

I like Bill's message, I don't buy everything he says. Of course, he is not the "Full Package" like Jesus Folks sell.

There are many interesting things one can do with these mythological parallels, proving that Jesus did not exist is not one of them.
