Why did Temples change?

If Joseph Smith was given directions directly by Christ as to how a Temple was to be built, why have they not been built that way since? I would think that the Savior directing specifically how to build one would be the way they would be built from then on. Why the changes?

I know you're referring specifically to architecture, rather than rites, but one reason the latter were changed was due to the fact that the Church conducted a survey of Temple-going members. It turns out that they didn't feel comfortable with certain aspects of the ceremony. So, I guess you could view this as a sort of Nielsen Ratings for the LDS Church.

That’s how I view the changes. They needed the ratings. The post 1990 version of the ceremony is much less violent, less Masonic, and more politically correct with regards to women. As you mention, the church conducted a survey, studied the results, and wala, made a change. That’s how revelation is supposed to work right?

No, you are missing a step.

The prophet was perplexed by the continual drop in temple attendance and thereby tithing dollars as well.

He took the issue to Elohim.

Elohim and Jesus brainstormed and asked what other worlds had done(ya know they got billions of em).

They came up with the idea to do the survey and based on that the three of them decided what should change and what should be omitted.
