Sort of. Why the hell didn't the eagles just fly Frodo and Sam to Mt. Doom to drop the ring in, as they were plenty able to pick them up at Mt. Doom and take them home? (Or did this just happen in the movie and not in the book? It's been 30 years since I read the book.)
The generally accepted explanation is that before Sauron was beaten the Eye of Sauron would have seen them coming as soon as they entered his lands and the Nazgul would have stopped them. Once Sauron was dead the Nazgul fell and the Eye was gone.
