The difference in a magician and a Prophet?

Post by _zzyzx »

One pulls a rabbit out of a hat. The other pulls a Book of Mormon out of a hat.

The rabbit is real.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you do criticize them you'll be a mile away and you'll have their shoes.

The Book of Mormon is real, too. That's how he pulled it out.

There is no definitive notion of what a "prophet" is. Even in the biblical tradition there
are various types of prophets. King Saul is once mentioned as associating with some
"prophets" who seem to have been a bit strange by later Israelite standards. A
"prophet" like Joshua, who is reported to have been a war-leader and a guy who
could make the sun stand still in the sky, is rather different from a prophet like
Nathan, who first of all argues with King David, against building a Canaanite temple.

Probably, somewhere in the Israelite tradition, we might find a "prophet" who
fits the Joe Smith image of "magician." We might look at Jannes and Jambres,
I suppose -- but my favorite would be Balaam's Ass.

"The difference in a magician and a Prophet?"

Most magicians have cute assistants with big boobs. Monson doesn't have that.
