Tales - H.P. Lovecraft (inspired to pick this up by comments on the McNaughton Painting thread - first time reading any of his stuff)

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Playing Piano (I remain a complete idiot, still.)

The Satanic Bible - Anton Szandor LaVey (Read it once back in high school. Saw it at the library and grabbed it to refresh my memory - what a joke...)

Currently reading the Masters of Rome series, a historical fiction series covering the major personalities in the last days of the Republic.

Which one are you on? Those books are great.

I just finished McCullough's biography of John Adams and am currently finishing Niall Ferguson's The Cash Nexus.

I just finished Sunnyside by Glen David Gould.


It's a pretty good book about Charlie Chaplin, early Hollywood, and World War I. Not as good as his first book, though.

Also just finished Finding OZ: How Frank L. Baum Discovered the Great American Story.


Basically, the "The Wizard of Oz" gets the Dan Vogel treatment, where we learn all about the life of its author and see how his experiences influenced the book (i.e. "The Wizard"= Rockefeller, "The Scarecrow"= stupid mid-western Farmers, "Kansas" = um, Kansas). If you're a fan of the "Oz" books, I highly recommend it.

Currently, I'm reading Nikos Kazantzakis's The Last Temptation of Christ. I'm really enjoying it.

I just finished a series of short stories by D.H. Lawrence. The poem, Snake, remains my favorite bit of Lawrence's writing, however.

My older two girls and I had fun this past summer reading books, then watching their cinematic interpretations. We read Cannery Row, then watched the movie. We did the same with the Harry Potter series. Courtney and I are the only two who made it through the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it was well worth it. Courtney is an LoR geek now. She can map the entirety of Middle Earth from memory. I'm going to re-read The Hobbit before the movie comes out next year.

Next up for me is The Kite Runner, I think. I've heard good things about it and it's been sitting on my bookshelf for quite a while now.

PS. My daughter, Madeline, loves to read about space, the planets, solar systems, etc. She ordered Cosmos by Giles Sparrow. It came in the other day and it is an utterly gorgeous (huge!) book. The photography is no less than stunning. I highly recommend it.

Both now. I wasn't a Brandon Sanderson fan until I heard he was finishing the series and read some of his books to find out how he wrote. I like his stuff and eagerly await the end of the Wheel of Time so he can write his extended series.

Third one. Young Julius Caesar is beginning his military career.

I actually haven't touched it for some time as I'm trying to playtest a new game for a friend and work out all the kinks in the rules. That, and I'm moving. Hopefully after this week is over and I send off final comments and have finished moving I can get back into it.

We usually have lunch with Brandon when he comes to town on tour. My husband will be seeing him on the 28th; alas, I work and have classes that day.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Mistborn trilogy. Warbreaker was likable and delightfully edgy but I didn't quite fall in love with it like I did Mistborn. Haven't read any of his others yet. Haven't read Robert Jordan either, but my husband seems to be a huge fan.
