In short, I believe the phenomenon you are highlighting has less to do with the Church and more to do with human psychology and sociological patterns.

No it's not unique to LDS culture. I work with this Jewish girl. She's Reform....doesn't even believe in God. Her parents are fine with that. But if she were to marry a non-Jew, then there's a problem.

Anyway I suspect the "human psychology and sociological patterns" you refer to are stronger in certain cultures— especially those that are traditional and conservative. One's like the LDS Church.

I have a few words:

1. Thank you all, especially TT for making this thread a success. I am enjoying it immensely.

2. I am sometimes tactful, sometimes not.

3. I hope that every child of every age grows up to be a rational and honorable human being. I feel the BEST place for this to occur is away from the Church.

4. Yes, I hope Scott's lad leaves the Church after the age of accountability. I also have no doubt Scotty Dog would eventually come to love him, regardless. I think he is a good enough, if stupid, guy.

5. TT, please Die in a Fire and Have a Nice Day.

Are the missionaries a "class act" because they hoped I would leave the teachings of my father and join their church?

~td~

No I don't believe I missed any point...the fact is missionaries didn't go post in an open forum on the Internet about their hopes that you would be freed from "the stupid group of non-thinkers attempting to poison [your] little mind"? There's still an equivalence problem here.

Maybe...and to the extent I was inferring an assertion of uniqueness on you, I apologize. Perhaps I should have sought clarification first.

So, what, it is OK to hope but not to post that hope on the internet?

OK then.

Typical of a bomb thrower.

You crossed a line.

Gadianton Plumber wrote:3. I hope that every child of every age grows up to be a rational and honorable human being. I feel the BEST place for this to occur is away from the Church.

And there you go again.

And again...you seriously need to grow up.

Let's take a look at Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=die%20in%20a%20fire) to see what that not-so-innocent "Die in a Fire" phrase means:

"A statement that shows such utter disgust, contempt, hatred, and/or loathing for a fellow human being that you wish for them to expire in an extremely painful(and one would assume spectacular and tragic) way. This is usually precipitated by someone so violating what the wisher considers basic human decency, morals, or intelligence that little other recourse is avaliable."

So tell me Nyal, is that really what you are wishing upon me?

I don't give a damn what someone's personal thoughts are; but, when someone starts posting about another person's 12 year. old son on an open Internet forum, there's a line that has been crossed. Is there no such thing as decorum anymore?

What line did I cross? Hoping a child grows up to reject the faith of its parents? THAT'S a line to you? You need to unclench a tad. I hope all of your children reject the your faith, too. Are those fighting words to you?

You need to grow up. I can say that, too.

I am not bound by any website's definitions of anything. PLEASE Die in a Fire. (are you really that literal? If you are, please Die in a Soup, if that's better)

Define decorum. I also hope Scott's 12 YO gets married and has kids of his own. Is THAT OK?

Yes, as a matter of fact, they are. I just hope your children grow up to be happy and healthy...whatever their belief system...that okay with you?

Then please, by all means, tell me what YOU mean by the use of the phrase. Otherwise, I can only use the commonly held definition which expresses a desire on your part to see me die in a painful manner.
