"Christian anti-Mormons are no different than that wonderful old man down the street who turns out to be a child molester." - Obiwan, nutjob Mormon apologist - Fri Feb 25, 2011 3:25 pm
A local university I used to live by had a blackface controversy. During homecoming, one of the fratboy floats was in blackface in an effort to parody Charles Barkley. They didn't seem to appreciate how incredibly racist what they were doing was. Ahh, fratboys. Like Nazi analogies, there are times when it is appropriate in context. That wasn't one of them. I know they were lucky not to be expelled from the university, and the fraternity itself was suspended then eventually disbarred. That was for doing it in the parade. The people involved were ostracized and lucky not to get kneecapped in a parking lot. I'm not sure what would happen at BYU for this, but at most universities, doing blatantly racist things is a cardinal sin.

I don't see anything about race in the Honor Code, other than a generic pledge to "respect others." There is probably an anti-racist statement somewhere else in the school's expected standards, but I wouldn't know where.
I do know that in September 2004, DH and I were interviewed for the school newspaper wanting to run an article on our interfaith marriage. The morning that the article was supposed to run, the reporter called me in tears saying that her editor had halted the press at the last minute, stating that it was too much of an endorsement of marrying outside the temple and outside the church. I pointed out that the school had run an article on interracial couples at BYU some months earlier and surely this wasn't all that different in terms of potential controversy, and she said, "I know. And we're still catching flack for that."
