Voting for Obama is as bad as reading anti literature!

Post by _zeezrom »

Someone close to me said recently:

"Obama's campaign had a ton of media attention and drew a lot of followers in. My dad was sucked in but I thankfully talked some sense into him and he ended up not voting for Obama. Anti-Mormon literature is just like this: sensational - and you need to be wary of it."

Interesting that so many LDS folk are anti-Obama rather than trying to improve things by being active participants in things positive.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you do criticize them you'll be a mile away and you'll have their shoes.

Hi zeezrom,

More Mormons voted for Barack Obama for President in 2008, then Mormons who ended up voting for Bill Clinton for President back in 1992 and in 1996.

For Example, LDS Apologist LifeOnaPlate supported and ended up voting for Barack Obama for President in 2008.

I've noticed lots of Mormons (online and here at BYU) who are vocal supporters of Obama. I imagine they're not the majority, but they're a loud minority.

I would have to say voting for Obama would have been worse than running naked around the temple and waving a banner stating, "I love Ed Decker!"

*sigh*

When a repubican is president he is always a Nazi.

When a dem is present he is always the anti-Christ.

I for one, am very fiscally conservative and probably one of the biggest cheerleaders for capitalism you will ever find. As such, I disagree profoundly with some of Obama's domestic economic policies. However, he was elected by, as the Book of Mormon would say "by the voice of the people."

I appreciate the fact that in this country -- just as in the UK, Germany, an many other modern societies -- we can voice our concerns freely. As a result, I'll continue to voice my opposition to many of Obama's fiscal policies but I will support him because he is the President of the United States and I'm a proud American. As they might say in the UK, I am part of the "loyal opposition" -- they key word here being loyal.

Frankly, I'm perplexed by this seeming human psychological need to literally demonize those with whom we disagree -- be it in politics or religion. Some of us, as non-believers but still relatively active Latter-day Saints are accused of being "fifth columnist" and "wolves in sheep's clothing." Some of us non-believers look down on believers and hold their faith up to ridicule.

I think Jesus -- the influential Messianic figure from history -- would have a big problem with all of this.

Seth

PS -- So Obama spoke yesterday in NYC and I disagreed with about 80% of what the guy said. Nevertheless, as i was sitting and working yesterday a few of us at work looked out the window and saw his motorcade pass by the office on Wall and Water. It was pretty cool to see. By virtue of his office alone, Obama deservers our loyal respect as he is our freely elected leader. In 2012, I'm pretty sure to vote for another candidate (unless of course it is Palin -- in which case I'll just write in my own damn name).

The Church makes a big deal about loyalty. GBH gave a good talk on it once. I think much of what he said can be applied to our civic responsibilities.
