Ironically, I just studied this yesterday.
The Atonement itself is paying the price for forgiveness of sins.
This was handled by offerings in the Old Testament as the people were to follow the law.

Leviticus chapters 1-7 describes the different types of offerings (Burnt Offering, Grain Offering, Fellowship Offering, Sin Offering, Guilt Offering).
This passage lists out all of the different offerings that were required for the different types of sins for the atonement.

In the New Testament, it changes as Christ dies as the ultimate sacrifice for mankind's sin.
