Laughter?
Laughter?
In my kitchen, at one end of the counter, propped up on a small easel, sits a large 18" x 18" tile that my wife made at a homemaking meeting some years ago, upon which is written this quote from President Hinckley:
"In all of living, have much fun and laughter. Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured."
Whenever I look at it, I always think of that thing in the temple where they command you to "...avoid all light-mindedness, loud laughter..."
So, this probably isn't a real barn-burner, but does anyone have any idea how the prophet could justify making such a (in my opinion level-headed and sensible) statement when the temple ceremony expressly forbids such behavior? And how we as TBMs didn't make any sort of fuss about the apparent disparity between the two?
Just sayin'...

Re: Laughter?
Would you say there is a difference between 'fun and laughter' and 'light-mindedness and loud laughter'?
Could you provide an example of a situation that falls into either category, or do you believe they are the same because both contain the word laughter?

Re: Laughter?
What always struck me as funny while making those four covenants in the temple for dead people, is why do spirits need to make these promises.
I mean why would dead people be needing to promise to not engage in loud laughter? Or to give all they have to the church, (what do they have)? Or to refrain from sex with anyone other than their spouse (I thought they couldn't have sex in heaven until they were resurrected)?
But back to the laughter thing...
Isn't there a scripture or two about enduring to the end? Doesn't this trump an opinion from a church leader?
;-)

This leaves the way open for Deseret Book and multi level marketing genius in The Church to start a whole new campaign selling decibel meters so you can tell when you are getting close to violating the Temple Covenants.
Anothe business opportunity for The Faithful and another object lesson to be taught from the pulpit on how to become sanctified: buy the Priesthood Approved Decibel Meter and be safe! A whole line of books to come in support, written by GA's on which comedians make you laugh too loudly and are thus tools of Satan.

I think a reasonable person would interpret there to be much overlap between the two. When having fun, might we not be considered to be in a 'light-minded' state? In the course of having 'much laughter' couldn't we expect a few outbursts of 'loud laughter'?
Just one more contradiction in a belief system filled with contradictions.
To Inconceivable: Was that LOL loud? Were you light-minded when you LOL'd?

It is possible that the disparity is bridged by an intuitive understanding between joyful fun and laughter, and the kind displayed when you get really drunk and then end up painting your buddies nut-sack with spray paint after he passes out.
I think members know the difference between these different kinds of laughter.

It's not necessarily a good thing to get drunk and paint your friends nut sack, but what's wrong with having that kind of experience in your life? What if you found out your dad did that once when he was in college? Would you think less of him? We shouldn't spend our lives doing stupid stuff, but I also don't think we should spend our lives with a stick up our butt.

Wow... good point. I always thought I overanalyzed these things, but that never even occurred to me.
What I always thought was a little off was the idea that spirits in the afterlife, after having their work done for them, would have the option to either accept it or reject it. I was always, like "um... they're there... they would see that it's real. Why would they ever say 'no'?" That never added up. Then I found out Smith made the whole thing up and I stopped being confused about it...
