Whenever I look at it, I always think of that thing in the temple where they command you to "...avoid all light-mindedness, loud laughter..."

So, this probably isn't a real barn-burner, but does anyone have any idea how the prophet could justify making such a (in my opinion level-headed and sensible) statement when the temple ceremony expressly forbids such behavior? And how we as TBMs didn't make any sort of fuss about the apparent disparity between the two?

Just sayin'...

No not a real barn burner

I've always thought that "loud laughter" referred to mocking or making a joke at someone else's expense and "light mindedness" means not treating sacred/serious things with the appropriate respect.

And the quote on your kitchen counter I think explains itself, life is to be enjoyed!

More than quite snickering during the ceremony disrupts the flow. Wait till you get outside and then experience the joy that Joseph Smith says we are meant to have. As for steady dourness, you can alway wander over to the MAD board.

Then why didn't joe say "don't mock or make a joke at someone's expense"? He knew those words yea?

Good question. Maybe God told him what words to use, who knows. ;)

Hey--I had one of those. I sold it at our garage sale. Along with a nice picture of a temple. They were one of the first things to go.
Truth Dancer wrote:What always struck me as funny while making those four covenants in the temple for dead people, is why do spirits need to make these promises.

I mean why would dead people be needing to promise to not engage in loud laughter? Or to give all they have to the church, (what do they have)? Or to refrain from sex with anyone other than their spouse (I thought they couldn't have sex in heaven until they were resurrected)?
How did I never catch that in all of my visits to the temple? Great points and totally hilarious!
