you mentioned that you were surprised that the the Mormons do not celebrate ash wednesday because many christian religions do. Why would Mormons follow a custom that began in the 12th century? That was my point. It would have been surprising if they did.

Why do they observe Christmas?:
In the 4th century CE, Christianity imported the Saturnalia festival hoping to take the pagan masses in with it. Christian leaders succeeded in converting to Christianity large numbers of pagans by promising them that they could continue to celebrate the Saturnalia as Christians.
Shouldn't they, on principle, ignore it like Jehovah's Witnesses?

They have a reputation that is at least as extreme as the LeBaron's, and maybe more so? I don't know if you are familiar with Big Love, but the Greens are based in part on Kingston stories.
Thanks for the clarification! I've watched it all before, but it's been a while. Yeah..the Greenes via Big Love are not like the Greens in person O.o And I've started to hear some pretty crazy stories of 18 year olds with 3 wives via the Kingstons. So not really my favorites.

I don't think the we know the exact date of christ's birth but by tradition it is celebrated on december 25th. I suppose that His birth needs to be celebrated and that day is as good as any.

According to the Church the exact date is 6th April. But what would life be without the inclusion of a good pagan festival?

This is further proof of the truthfulness of the Mormon Gospel. It is prophetic that the church has been groping junk for decades before getting on a plane to Kolob. Today our airport security is just barely catching a clue.

I agree that it would be surprising for Mormons to follow the Christian liturgical calendar. Most Mormons I know don't know that exists.
There are certain times of year where the ignorance about Christian practices are more obvious, such as Lent and Christmas.
My point is, this is strange, especially to people unfamiliar with Mormonism. That the liturgical calendar came into being over time, before Mormonism arose, is irrelevant, in my opinion.

It is irrelevant to Mormons, since they reject the traditions of a church that they believe to be apostate. They are participating in "experimental religion", which attempts to re-create the Biblical New Testament church from the ground up.
