William Henry Hickenlooper looks like a facinating guy.
He was sealed to his first wife in the Nauvoo temple. That is pretty cool. I didn't think that many couples got to do that.

With my ancestor, there's enough ambiguity in his statement that you could argue about what he actually saw. What is interesting to me was that he said the Spirit confirmed to him on that occasion that he was to support Brigham and the Twelve in leading the church. I might disagree about who saw what, but I don't argue about people's spiritual experiences.
I don't see the ambiguity at all. In fact, if this letter surfaced when you were still an active member in the church, it would have confirmed your testimony. But now you see it much differently. And that is okay. But it is nice that you have an ancestor who was present when it happened. It shows that something happened at that meeting.
I intend to lay a foundation that will revolutionize the whole world.

No it doesn't. It only establishes that like many other people, he later wrote that something did. Since you've read none of the surrounding history, you have no idea what you are talking about. Once again.

Are there any such testimonies of the transfiguration written by people who did not follow Brigham Young? If not then probably the testimony of at least 5 Whitmers would be acceptable.

why me wrote:This is amazing. To have a letter where an ancestor claims to have seen a miracle would be very convincing that the lds church is true, especially the miracle that happened when the lds church was to decide who to lead it.
You wouldn't happen to be a direct descendant of Martin Harris would you?

LOL! Why Me is a direct "intellectual" descendant, if not a physical descend ant. I find it amusing that Mormons rely on the testimony of a lifelong, serial dupe who joined whatever cult happened to be in season, including their own.

(Scene: The congregation is leaving the meeting. Groups of people begin to form to discuss what happened and what was said in the meeting)
Attender #1: When Brigham Young was speaking, I really felt the spirit.
Attender #2: Not so much when Sidney Rigdon was speaking.
Attender #1: I know, right?!?
Attender #3: I concur totally. In fact, when Brigham was speaking I was really moved by the way he spoke. It reminded me a lot of Joseph Smith Jr.
Attender #4: Totally.
Attender #5: At times, Brigham even took on the countenance of Joseph!
Attender #6: Shut up!
Attender #5: I'm serious!
Attender #4: Yeah I saw it too.
Attender #1: I didn't see it, but I felt impressed that Brigham was the man for the job.
Attender #6: Attender #4, you're such a follower.
Attender #18: Sidney Rules!!
Fast forward a couple years (or decades) and you have many journals bearing the mark of group think.
One possibility.

Hmmm. I did not know that. One of my other ancestors, Ezra Granger Williams, was sealed in Nauvoo, too. We Williamses have gone a long way down from our earlier prominence. :-)

I might just leave it at: "That experience was for you and you alone. It has nothing to do with me and no bearing on my life."
What this means is that person who experienced the spiritual manifestation has NO business telling me about it. If they do, they should expect it to be debated - though I likely won't try.

Any guy with the name Hickenlooper has to get points just for the name alone...
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.
