Well, Eric, let me cut to the chase for you:

Monitoring the activities of the relatives of someone you dislike simply because they are the relatives of someone you dislike seems rather obsessive.

And maybe just a little bit creepy.

Singling out DCP's son for criticism because you don't like DCP is lame.

Happy New Year.

Maybe it is.

But one thing I remember most from my time as a church employee (ZS) is that nepotism IS the order of the day.

Please. Feel free to always cut to the chase with me right from the start. :)

Nah... not buying it.

If this isn't a topic for Mormon-Discussing, I don't know what is. You're just whining about it because, well... let's just not.

Just in case you didn't know: Dan Peterson is a relevant topic for this discussion board. Nepotism is an issue many people have with the Mormon Church. The Deseret News is owned by the Mormon Church. The Mormon Church is a relevant topic for this discussion board. Dan Peterson contributes to the Deseret News and works for the Mormon Church. Dan Peterson's son now contributes to the Deseret News. Some people could say that Jeffrey Peterson's writing skills are questionable at best. Nepotism in Mormonism is a relevant topic for this discussion board... Do I really need to explain this?

Besides, if you look at the OP, this was supposed to be a congratulatory thread.

No, by all means. Let's hear your brilliant theory on why I'm discussing a topic that was posted on a discussion board.

So, let me see if I understand the purpose of this thread:

(1) To accuse Dan Peterson of engaging in an act of nepotism by . . . what exactly? Getting his son some free-lance work writing articles about Yogi Bear for a small-time religious newspaper?

Wow. Sinister.

(2) To highlight the fact that a news agency known for mediocrity in writing has yet another writer of the quality that we would expect from it writing occasional articles for them (but not even formally on their staff).

(3) To note that this newest writer happens to be related to someone who is relevant to Mormon studies.

Absolutely riveting.

Fair enough. In turn, allow me to be the first to congratulate you for exposing this disquieting behavior on the part of the Deseret News and the Peterson family, and for calling our attention to this hypnotic turn of events. The Evil League of Evil will have to step more carefully with you on the prowl.

It’s no surprise that Eric would start this thread, partly, perhaps, because Mr.Peterson still seems to think it’s okay to incarcerate 15 year old boys for “transgressions” that most parents would handle themselves. I certainly had my share of it, and never shipped my sons off to a “religious reform school”. He still sees no injustice in this. Apparently, since he’s gone Abbott and Costello mute. Imagine a well-paid BYU professor in his mid-late 50s challenging a 25 year old Mormon reform school “inmate”. Never a single voice of protest by the ivory-tower apologists was ever raised against this unjust incarceration. Not. A. Single. Word. They seemed almost happy to let Eric be force-fed the Book of Mormon under the penalty of “facing the wall”.

Nothing. Zilch. Nada. “He deserved it.”

What does "ZS" mean in this context?

Eric wrote:It may be hard to believe, but the prestigious newspaper Deseret News has managed to finally land some real literary talent. Before our imaginations get the best of us, I want to assure you that although Daniel C. Peterson can now read Deseret News articles written by his son, Jeffrey Peterson, at the breakfast table alongside his delightful column in the aptly named Mormon Times publication, there was absolutely no nepotism involved in selecting the latest Des. News scribbler.

Hard hitting pieces like 'Yogi Bear' lacks the charm of original cartoon certainly speak for themselves.

Please join me in congratulating both big and little Peterson on their new journalistic endeavors.

Not at all. Outside of message boards DCP has more than proven his success as a scholar of Islam, and I take nothing away from him in that regard. Anyone who can master, and even teach Arabic, and have an excellent grasp of Islamic history, has my respect in that regard.
