Student who's studying Mormonism
Hello, everyone! I'm Jennifer and I'm a newbie to the forums. I'm currently taking a religious studies at Ball State University (Muncie, IN) and one of the assignments for the class is to learn about a certain religion from people who practice!
Normally, I wouldn't be one to join a forum for such a thing, but I'm pretty interested in the religion itself. I'm a Christian that's looking for answers. . . and hopefully I'll find some faithful answers here on that journey.
Yeah...I know. I sound pretty cheesy right now. . but ultimately, those ARE two of my main goals. Anyway, I'm pretty glad to be here. Hope to meet ya'll soon. :)

Re: Student who's studying Mormonism
Glad to meet you, as well, Always.
I think you may find this board interesting. It's a well educated and rather rowdy group. You'll hear all points of view regarding Mormonism. You can make up your own mind as you go along. As Bette Davis said "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy ride". :) Really, you'll be fine! Ask questions and read many responses before you decide which is best.
Welcome to the board!

This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

You should know that if your assignment is to learn from members of the faith you may want to avoid this board. Very few of us are active members here.

Don't take everything here as Gospel truth. You may even want to ask serious questions in the Celestial forum, because you might get answers from some there who do not contribute to these lower forums. I am a life long member, but to be honest, I know very little about my church. I should have paid more attention in Seminary.

So telling the truth about the demographics of this board is de-inviting now?

You didn't de-invite her as much as you suggested that she go elsewhere. "Avoid this board" is close enough to the latter to be unacceptable.

Re: Student who's studying Mormonism
I find that to be a "dumb" rule, especially that it even had to be made a rule. Someone seems to have "control" issues?
People can choose if they want to stay or not. Someone suggesting that their might be "better" places to go per what the person has said, and especially listing them is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.
I can't believe I even have to say it, but a discussion board is not the best place to learn the best and most accurate things on a subject. None of us can get into the kind of detail that is required on any subject if someone really wants to understand it. And since she was here in relation to school, this obviously wouldn't be the best place. A useful place, but not the best place.
Anyway, dumb rule for multiple reasons, not to mention the banning of reasonable free speech.

I've found this board to be quite educational (and a lot of fun). I'm sure Jennifer has access to all the same books that the rest of us have. This could be a good place to find out which books to read first.
Free speech is a good thing, but the rules of this board are not governed entirely by that principle. One is not required to participate if one does not like the rules.
Sorry Shades if I muscled in on your territory :).

Implying that people should go elsewhere is not only dangerously close to "clannishness" (depending on intent), but it's also a form of cop-out.
If all we're going to do is direct traffic, what's the point of having a board?
