Oh, the good the church is capable of!
Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names. 1 in 2 children in the world live in poverty. 400,000,000 of these children have no access to safe water. 270,000,000 of these have no access to health services.
The average cost of water project in a needy community (i.e. Small village in Uganda) is $6500, which includes long term monitoring and evaluation.
Schools and medical clinics in these areas cost about $15-30k each to build.
If the Mormon church decided to fund these projects instead of the City Creek mall ($4 billion), they could make possible the construction of:
Over 300,000 wells
Nearly 70,000 schools and hospitals

Yeah, preach it!
I believe that $25 can provide clean water for life to one person in a third world country.
It boggles my mind to imagine how many people my tithing could have saved, literally.

Like gas masks on an aircraft: save yourself first so that you are capable of helping a greater number of others.

Belmont,
Will you explain what you mean by that remark?

I simply meant that if the church gave away all of their resources, instead of investing in real estate and building up their business end of things to make more money, they would have a lot less resources to give now. As it stands, because of the business choices, they are in a far better position to help a greater number of people -- and they do.

Um, not to rain on the parade but could you provide some proof that the church is able to do MORE financial humanitarian good due to its real estate investments?
From what we do know, according to the financials put out by the church in the UK, the church doesn't even use all of the money it collects in the Humanitarian Fund for helping people. And, yeah, that is kinda disappointing.
Avon gives more to charity (percent) than the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Doesn't that give you pause? It sure shocked me to learn that.

Let us say, for the moment, that the church did not invest in any real estate. At all.
Assuming it survived, it would today be a small frontier-style church with no money and no resources.
How much could it possibly give to the needy of the world?
Simple logic, really.

How much does "the church" give now, Simon? How much?

Paying those millions for all that desert acreage in Arizona is bound to pay off once the mesquite market rebounds. The Church will rend the hickory and alder cartels to pulp.

Simon,
Have u stopped to consider what the return might be for God if he spent the money to educate 1 billion people for the next 20 years?
