Daisy Girl Scouts: In Need of Opinions

Post by _MsJack »

My daughter is turning five at the end of the month, and I'm getting excited to start her in the Girl Scouts program this summer. She'll be a Daisy. I'm excited for her because I never got to be a Daisy; I grew up in Anchorage, Alaska and there was a lack of girls and interested parents for a Daisies troop, so I didn't start until Brownies at grade 1. My mom was also a Girl Scout when she was a little girl and I know that if she were still alive, she'd be proud to see my daughter become a Scout.

So, I need serious opinions . . .

Tunic?

Or vest?

I'm torn. I think the tunic is cuter but the vest is more "scout-ie," if you know what I mean. I want to get her a starter kit including one or the other for her birthday at the end of the month.

And I think I just have to go with the beanie, even if she only wears it for photo ops so that I have pictures with which to torture her later:

And isn't this hoodie just adorable?

Okay. So maybe I just wanted to gush.

Hi Jack!

I spent 18 years in GSUSA, 11 of those as the leader of 2 troops, and a few years as a leader's kid. :-) Having had experiences with all sorts of uniform combinations, I think that while the tunic is just *darn cute* and really appropriate for ceremonies, the vest is much more practical. She'll be able to move around in it, run, play games, go on field trips and such.

Should ever the need arise, I am a virtual encyclopedia of GS trivia. When she bridges to Brownies, make sure the leader uses white roses in the ceremony. The first GS troop was the White Rose troop of Savannah, Ga. There were 18 members. The first GS badges were made in Newark, New Jersey.

Also, if you need the recipe for the original Girl Scout cookies made by the girls themselves, say, for a gathering. I have it.

On my honor,
Jersey Girl

The real thing:

NEW FRIENDS AND OLD FRIENDS

THOSE ARE SILVER, THESE ARE GOLD.
NEW-MADE FRIENDSHIPS, LIKE NEW WINE,
AGE WILL MELLOW AND REFINE.
FRIENDSHIPS THAT HAVE STOOD THE TEST
TIME AND CHANGE ARE SURELY BEST;
BROW MAY WRINKLE, HAIR GROW GRAY,
FRIENDSHIP NEVER KNOWS DECAY.
FOR 'MID OLD FRIENDS TRIED AND TRUE,
ONCE MORE WE OUR YOUTH RENEW.
BUT OLD FRIENDS, ALAS MAY DIE,
NEW FRIENDS MUST THEIR PLACE SUPPLY.

Go with the vest.

Ask a third person to show her pictures and ask her.

Hi MsJack,

Perhaps the easiest answer to a question I have ever seen on these boards.

The vest, for SURE!

Vest!

I am putting my daughter in Brownies in the fall with some of her classmates. It seems like it'll be fun! I am excited, too.

This way I have something to replace the church Achievement Days activities with. Gag. They have lessons on modesty and how to choose a spouse.

Jack,

I was thinking about something. No, really. :-) Some troop leaders like to try to have the girls decide on a "troop uniform". I don't know if your daughter has been placed in a troop yet, this is typically finalized in fall. If you wait until fall to choose/purchase a uni, they will likely be out of stock.

So...having said all this confusing stuff, I would purchase it early if I were you. If there is a push for troop uni's, suggest to the leader that the girls make troop t-shirts. This is always a good thing and gives the troop it's own "brand" when on field trips and other types of outings.

I'm liking the vest.

I'm really sorry I didn't get to do this as a kid.
