Revelation at the ward level-my head is spinning!

Post by _kairos »

This past Sunday,me the nevermo, dutifully sitting with TBM spouse in gospel doctrine class. At the beginning of the lesson, the very TBM teacher asked the class to give examples of revelation the PSR's/Church leaders have pronounced to the members during their lifetimes. Hands shot up every where with eager answers-the 1978 lifting of the priesthood ban(ok) was the first answer-then a torrent of answers including FHE, temple building, the welfare program, perpetual education fund, humanitarian aid, prop 8, 1988 allowing women to speak in conference, allowing women to say the opening/closing prayers, and finally the 3 hour block!!!!

i am going through a WTF moment, but not a single challenge to any of this bulls*&t. Coming out of my coma, I heard the final respondent say something like chicken man, " it is everywhere, revealtion is everywhere in this church"-AAaaarrrrgh!!

later i asked tbm my wife when are they going to come out with a new d and c to capture what we heard in gospel doctrine- Hmmmm she muttered under her breath!

It's sad that corporate level business decisions are what pass for revelation these days.

For revelation to be a revelation, it must be canonized, which is why the 1978 revelation was so important. Otherwise it's just a policy change.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

This is very typical of TBMs. All the "good ideas" are revelation if it comes from someone who holds the priesthood keys. These are the type of people apologists hate because it makes Mormons look like idiots but I think the leaders in SLC love it.

Has the 1978 "revelation" been canonized? When I checked out of the church it was a lowly "Official Declaration". I was told (from my Bishop) that the reason it WASN'T scripture (like a new section of the D & C) was because the whole blacks/priesthood thing was created by man and not "of God".

Has it been added to scripture in the years I've been away? If not, why not?

Indeed. Here's one for you. The last GA to visit our stake instructed the Bishoprics not to assign topics for sacrament meeting. Instead, those giving the talks and doing the music are to pick the subject by personal revelation. We're one month into it and no disasters in the Stake so far......

Wrong. Revelation is revelation whether canonized or not.

I may be mistaken (happens more and more the further I get from 60), but I don't believe I've seen said revelation. There was an announcement that a revelation had been received (made into the official declaration), but that's all.

Anyone here see the revelation?

Okay... sorry.

The 1978 official announcement wasn't a revelation.

Can I get off the dunce chair now?

Don't be too hard on the class members. When the Church itself had to prepare a list for the lesson on "Continuing Revelation", here's the best they could come up with (in this order):

1. Church Correlation

2. Revelation extending the blessings of the priesthood to every worthy male member of the Church.

3. Publication of new Latter-day Saint editions of the scriptures.

4. Additional Quorums of the Seventy
