How many have crossed over?

Post by _Melchett »

Not me question really. It was emilysmith in this topic http://www.mormondiscussions.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=21638 that asked the question.

I'd be interested in the numbers, or are there more who have had their faith strengthened by participation here?

Me, except:

1. I started posting at the former Mormon Apologetics and Discussion Board.

2. I was having sort of a crisis of faith at the time I started posting there, in that I was not seeing the Church having anything particularly meaningful or relevant to say about my life. But I did still believe that in the truth claims of the LDS Church.

I posted for years on MADB and elsewhere as a minor-league apologist. It was during about an 8-month break in posting that I crossed over to the dark side. Several people here have made the same transition.

For me, it was a matter of integrity. I examined the evidence over a number of years, and I could see that it all pointed in one direction. "Crossing over" was just acknowledging reality. And before anyone gets their knickers in a knot, I realize that other people can and do look at the same evidence and reach different conclusions. I couldn't, at least not without losing my integrity.

I started out on alt.religion.Mormon as a TBM. That lasted for a couple of years. The I started my own discussion group with Don Bradley called "Loyal Liberal Mormons." John Dehlin was a member of it. So was the emeritus University of Chicago professor Wayne Booth. Then I was on ZLMB, but by that time I was getting increasingly critical. I stopped attending church in 2006.

I don't think I ever knew about that group, Kish! When I met J. Hillis Miller, the first thing he said to me was, "Are you from Utah?" When I asked him how he knew, he replied, "Because you sound just like Wayne Booth."

Do you know Jeff Needle? Gail Porritt?

Oh, and Hellmut Lotz was a heavy participant. Grant Palmer joined, although he didn't post much, and Lavina joined to share announcements of her conference watching parties.

Wow. I know Hellmut passing well, and I know of Jeff Needle from an email discussion list where I also run into Lavina on occasion.

What a fascinating crowd that must have been! *sigh* Late to the party again...

It had its moments. I have fond memories. I am still Facebook friends with some of the group.

Many have passed to the other side of the veil.

The rest are on their Journey. Many still hold firmly to their membership while others have ceased membership with the Church altogether. Some like Why Me have taken it upon themselves to be designated hitters and a few like Paul "Shulem" Osbourn have switched fan loyalty. It is all good since their journey still continues.

Do you think the "deconversion" was directly the result of the information you encountered on the Internet, or were you harboring small seeds of doubt beforehand?

Would it be an intrusion to list the names of anyone else we were aware of without them responding in this thread?
